I was trying to think of the last Cubs SS to have an arm like that. Nomar maybe? Otherwise, I'm not sure

Shawon had a cannon.

yeah, he could throw it 100mph into the 1st base side stands

I was very young at the time, but I remember someone telling me that the Cubs drafted the best available arm but he happened to be a SS instead of a pitcher.

The quote I remeber, which I'm going to attribute to Davy Johnson, went something along the lines of "of course the Cubs drafted Dunston ahead of Gooden...he has the better arm"

Dunston had a cannon for sure.

Oddly one of the throws I remember best was when he played some RF for the Cardinals and he GUNNED down Grace trying to score - granted, not that tough to do - but the throw was an absolute laser beam...but the best thing was Dunston then covered the lower third of his face with his glove for about the next 5 minutes because he was absolutely killing himself laughing at poor Gracie.

I just love that Zambrano was on the mound and Theriot was at second at the time. One guy is thinking, how'd he do that, and the other thinking damn it's nice to have somebody who can do that.

Yeah, that is the quote I'm thinking of. I remember that a reference was made about Dunston going before Gooden as part of it.

It's the Phillies' Jayson Werth.

Haha. Whoops.

Dunston never allowed a single throw to 1st base to have any arc on it whatsoever. Whether he stormed in on a swinging bunt and was only 50 feet from 1st base or not. It was actually comical watching the reaction of the 1b expecting and (sometimes) receiving a laser beam throw. (Sometimes) because, as others have pointed out), the crowd behind the dugout might be the recipient of those throws.

There were times that Dunston's throws were already at 1b before the hitter was halfway up the line. If he tried to lollypop one over there, it probably would have exited the stadium over the top balcony.

Rafael Furcal wishes he could throw as hard as Dunston could.

Somebody's not following the Cubs.

36 holes of golf between Wednesday and Thursday will do that to you.

Yeah. Every other Wednesday is normal for me because I play in a league. The Thursday one was a really fun charity event on an 18 hole, par 3 best ball scramble. Drunk before we stepped onto the first tee box.

Nice. I don't golf nearly enough.
