I have nothing really to back this up, but I wouldn't be surprised if Griffey retires soon and if that doesn't happen I think the Mariners will release him. They will approach him and ask if he would like to retire or be released.

The Mariners held a team meeting on Tuesday regarding recent accusations that Ken Griffey Jr. was unavailable for a Saturday pinch-hitting appearance because he was sleeping.

"We don't think there are two players who said that (about Griffey sleeping)," said Mike Sweeney, who spoke out in support of Griffey. "I challenged everyone in that room - if they said that to stand up and fight me. No one stood up." Basically, either there are two moles in the Mariners' clubhouse afraid to speak up, or Sweeney just called Larry LaRue of the Tacoma News Tribune a liar.

I REALLY doubt the players who snitched would stand up, admit that they were the ones that said that, and then fight a big guy like Sweeney. I'm surprised the M's resigned Griffey. It really made no sense for their ball club.

Seattle Mariners manager Don Wakamatsu denied Tuesday that Ken Griffey Jr. was asleep in the clubhouse when he was needed to pinch-hit Saturday.

Following a report in the Tacoma News Tribune on Monday that Griffey was napping, Wakamatsu, who was initially evasive when pressed following Saturday's game as to why he had not used the left-handed slugger as a pinch-hitter, said before the Mariners' game Tuesday against the Baltimore Orioles that Griffey had not been asleep.

Griffey also denied to The Seattle Times that he had been asleep during the eighth inning of Saturday's game.

"I'm available all the time,'' Griffey told The Times. "So, like I said. There are some issues that are not true in that situation.''

However, he wouldn't answer whether he had been sleeping during any other part of the game.

"I can't win this,'' Griffey said to Seattle media Tuesday. "I'm not trying to. So, it's simple. There are some things that are not accurate and that's it. I'll leave it at that.''

That's not denying that he was asleep.

Seems like it'd be pretty easy to "win" this if he just said he wasn't sleeping.

sounds like he was given permission to nap

I think giving any player no matter how good they were or what their status will be after they retire the privilege to sleep during the game sets a terrible precedent in the clubhouse. Oh well, I'm glad the Cubs don't have to deal with the Griffey and Bradley issues.

OK, so apparently Mike Sweeney called out the anonymous players in a clubhouse meeting and challenged them to stand up and fight. When no one stood up to accept his stupid challenge, he deduced that the reporter made the story up. Now the Mariners won't talk to the reporter anymore and kicked him out of a press conference. Can the Mariners just be contracted or something?

It's been an astonishingly quick fall from grace for Jack Z, even if the pre-season prognosticators who picked Seattle to surprise were off-base from the start.

yeah, that's embarrassing

lol this seems like something that would be happening in the cubs clubhouse.

Kyle Farnsworth says.....

The "napping incident" happens in every clubhouse. The only reason it's an issue is because of who was caught napping.

I think it's an issue when you lose a lot.

Have any news outlets dubbed this "Napgate" yet?

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=5187219

Ken Griffey Jr.'s agent told a Seattle radio station on Thursday a story about his client napping during a game was published prematurely by the Tacoma News Tribune.

Griffey's agent, Brian Goldberg, told KIRO Radio that Tacoma News Tribune reporter Larry LaRue was working a on a story about Griffey and his performance this season. But, LaRue accidently published his blog before finishing the story.

Goldberg said LaRue felt badly about publishing the story without talking to Griffey and Mariners manager Don Wakamatsu. LaRue, realizing his mistake, called the newspaper to try and retract the story.

The newspaper, Goldberg said, would not retract the story.

And the reporter won't say anything because he doesn't want the team to shut him out any more than it already has.

Just because he published his blog early, or without talking to the Mariners/Griffey, still doesn't mean Griffey wasn't sleeping in the clubhouse during a game. I mean was he trying to make an analogy about Griffey's performance this year with him hypothetically sleeping in the clubhouse and published it without finishing? I mean come on that is a pretty big stretch.

It's Griffey's agent who says he published "early". Completely untrustworthy, self-serving stuff from the Griffey camp.
