Hopefully we don't have to care what he does next year when the Cubs do the smart thing and don't re-sign him, and it would be the smart thing to do even if he wasn't in the lull that he's in.

I don't believe DERREK Lee stinks. I also think he's more likely to turn it around than Ramirez. But the truth remains that Derrek Lee's best hit in Wrigley came 7 years ago... And he was a Marlin...

What is that supposed to mean exactly?

A lot of people (including myself) thought Lee was washed up at the beginning of last year, but he turned it around and had one of the best seasons of his career. He has been bad for most of this year, but I doubt that will last. Regardless of how he finishes the season though, the Cubs would be wise to shake Lee's hand at the end of the year and let him walk. That position is just screaming for a left-handed run producer.

I agree with you there, not because of Lees slow start this year, but because like you said, its the best move. Id really like to think that the Cubs will be players for Fielder and Gonzalez when they reach FA in 2011, and hopefully we can sign some kind of Russell Branyan type as a 1 year stop gap for next year. If Lee were willing to sign a 1 year deal even at 10 mil, Id be all for it, but he'll be 35 by the end of the season, and he probably has 1 more 2-3 year contract left in him, assuming he puts up decent numbers this year, and Id prefer let someone else sign him to it.

You guys are crazy. This is setting up perfectly. Lee has a down year, thus costing big Jim less when he signs the contract extension. It really is a beautiful thing.

Now, where's that green text button?

On this date in baseball history, 2009:

- Derrek Lee was batting .209/.282/.363. He went on to have the second best season of his career.

Let's remember it's early, and there still isn't a large enough sample size for anything to mean all that much.

He has a .244 BABIP this year off of a 16.7% LD rate. While that LD rate is lower than what he has produced for the Cubs, he is facing some element of bad luck so far this year.

I think as he ages he's going to have longer and longer streaks like this. Last year was pretty great for him in that he put together a great run after his slow start. That was probably the best we'll see of him again. I'd love to see Adrian Gonzalez in town at some point, even if it means playing Nady, Lee on a 1 year deal (unlikely) or some temporary FA there next year.

[expletive], I'll happily take some kind of sucktacular Nady/Hoff 1B platoon monster if it means they'll unload the contents of a money bin on Adrian Gonzalez' doorstep.

I don't understand why he hasn't been moved out of the 3 hole in favor of Soriano, Byrd, or Soto.

But then I realize that Lou Piniella makes up the batting order.

As of now, the Padres staying hot through the trade deadline could be the best thing to happen to us. Either way, A Gons probably traded at some point, be it at the deadline or the offseason. Obviously, if the Pads are in contention, they wont move him this season, which is good, because as long as D Lees with us, we wouldnt make the move for him. However, the offseason is another story. It sucks that we'll have to part with a very nice prospect package, somethig like

-Vitters

-1 of Cashner or Jay Jackson

-1 of Carpenter or Coleman

-1 of HJ Lee or Watkins

-another decent prospect-IE Mcnutt, Raly, Kirk, Spencer, Campana, Rhee, Jung, Guyer etc.

Id really like to do it without giving up B Jax, and obviously Castro.

If we want Adrian, thats whats going to happen. Someones going to make a trade for him at some point, and they're going to sign him to a whopper of an extension. Assuming it happens in the offseason, being freed from Lilly and Lees contracts, coupled with Kosukes and Grabows and a few others after 2011 should put us in a position where we can afford him. Of course Prince Fielder isnt a shabby consolation prize by any means. He can say what he wants about liking Milwaukee, but Scott Boras isnt in the business of handing out home town discounts.

Anyone who regrets moving prospects of any level for Adrian Gonzalez should get a pipe to the dome.

Were going to need some of these guys. Say we do sign Adrian either before of after the 2011 season, you have to assume he'll be getting at least the Teixara deal. Couple that with 3-4 more years of Soriano at about 20 mil a pop, and however much more is left on Zambranos deal. That will add up to at least 60 mil for those 3 guys. We need to assume that by that point, Kosukes and Aramis are gone, and while that will free up some money, we'll still need to build around those guys. Castro is a piece that we'll need to hold on to. The Sox were able to land Peavy without giving up Beckham, Im sure we could land Adrian without giving up Castro, it just going to take 3 top prospects and at least 2 more pieces.

Peavy is nowhere near as valuable as Gonzalez in a trade.

"Lee does work with hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo, but trusts himself more.

"I still feel I'm my best hitting coach," Lee said. "I listen to how my body feels and I know what I need to do. Rudy's there for support. I've had this swing for a long time. I know what gets me in trouble. I get in these funks sometimes and I have to work my way out." "

awesome.

I get what Lee is saying and respect it, I think he could have worded it a little better though without sounding like he feels Rudy is worthless in helping him. Either way it's what most people believe about the hitting coach and veteran player relationship, Lee just contextualized it.
