Lou has had some success with 20 year old phenom shortstops before.

Not saying he's gonna be Arod or anything, just wanted to point that out.

I'll say it. He's going to be A-Rod

While I kind of wish we had waited another month or so to miss the super 2 status, I'm thinking the Cubs didn't bring him up for a taste of the big leagues. I think he's here to stay and I think Lou is going to play him everyday. As far as the super 2 status goes, it may not even be around when his shot at it comes around.

Not sure what to think, as far as stats for him this year in the majors, but if he holds his own as a 20 year old, it's all we can hope for. And considering how he's handled every promotion so far, I think he'll do it.

I'd like to think you're right. But, there are two veteran 2b's sitting on the bench, so I can see Lou "mixing and matching" to get those veterans some at bats wherever he can. Kind of like how Soto sits for no apparent reason so that Hill can play more than he should.

Yeah, that's true. The Lou factor could POSSIBLY come into play. I wonder though how feasible it is for Ricketts' to be behind this? Any chance you think he'd tell Lou and Hendry he wants to see Castro up this year and played fulltime from here on out? I know owners don't typically get involved with this stuff, but with the possibility of this being Lou and Hendry's last year, I guess it's at least conceivable anyway......

Well I just think that's naive on your part. The Cubs suck at this. Why wouldn't you assume poor handling?

It'd be naive if I assumed they were going to handle him perfectly. It'd also be overly cynical if I simply assumed they were going to screw him up beyond repair.

There's a much greater chance that if he struggles for a while that they'd send him back to Iowa than that Lou would stick him on the end of the bench for 2 months.

I really fear that the majority of Cub fans have no idea of realistic expectations of Castro's performance this year. For his sake, I hope he doesn't struggle over this first few weeks.

Probably, but as others have said, the likelihood that he'll be making contact even if he struggles should help the general perception of him. Pie and Patterson often looked lost at the plate because of their high K rates when they struggled. Castro has struck out at a much lower rate (pretty much half) than Pie and Patterson.

A follow-up on the earlier question about Iowa roster moves. Although cubs.com is reporting that Tracy was optioned to Iowa, MLB Network is reporting instead that he was designated for assignment. If that's true and he isn't being sent to Iowa right away they wouldn't have to make another move.

It's a shame we will have to wait until the 3rd inning to see Castro hit a home run in his first major league at bat.

You were WAY off.

I was gone all day yesterday. I wake up today, check the box score from the game and see "S. Castro." I nearly had a conniption. I wanted him to stay in the minors for at least a few more months. I just hope his growth doesn't halt. Yesterday was a nice start though.

I was also curious about this, given that the Cubs didn't announce a corresponding 40-man move to go with Castro's call-up.

I think there was a vacant spot on the 40-man anyway, because cubs.com showed the roster at exactly 40 with both Castro and Tracy on it. If they ever do need to make room the first move would be to transfer Guzman to the 60-day DL (he's currently still on the 15-day). ESPN.com also says Tracy was optioned, so I think it's probably MLB Network that had it wrong.

Thought this was funny: Starlin Castro was the first Cub to homer in his first at-bat since......... Jim Bullinger in 1992

yep..i'm pretty sure i remember watching Bullinger hit that home run againt the Cards on WGN.
