The decision is not as simple as Deng, Noah, picks, etc. for Anthony.

Salaries certainly matter. Any team that trades for Carmelo will have to commit to a max extension. There are only a few teams that can even afford him. And any of those teams can conceivably get him for nothing except the money come next July.

I don't think he's valuable enough to trade away your promising young cheap players and give up all your picks for him. It remains to be seen if Denver can score a ton of cheap young talent and picks for Melo.

Sam Smith basically shot down the entire rumor and said that the Nuggets haven't even talked to any other teams about Melo and the Bulls would not consider trading Noah and have told him such.

Who knows whats true, but just throwing that out there.

The more I think about it, I don't even think they would really want Noah.

They would have to take on Deng, assuming there isn't a third team who would flip an expiring their way. So thats quite a bit of salary already. Then Noah is on the last year of his contract, so they'd be dishing out a ton of money for him.

Wouldn't they rather get 3 cheap years of Taj, who is probably a better Nene complement and the additional picks (I'm assuming if we substitute Noah for Taj it would be at the expense of a draft pick or two).

Deng, Taj, Charlotte Pick, Chicago 2011 & 2013 first rounders

or

Deng, Noah, (and all the money tied to them) and either Charlotte pick OR our 2011 & 2013 picks

Which is better for the team looking to rebuild after losing their star?

Because if we know anything, it's that Sam Smith is a credible source!

FWIW, I'm still not putting too much into this, it just seems like it's too good to be true. Plus the next big trade that John Paxson makes will be his first.

They'd probably get Johnson too in the 1st deal since he'd get no time behind Melo.

I think this is a valid point. NBA trades aren't really done to get better immediately. If Denver loses Melo, they know they aren't going to win. Didn't win before him. So, yeah it would be very enticing to get younger and cheaper for them.

Of course if the above is true, then Deng has no value to them. I still think it will take a 3rd team willing to take on Deng and give up an expiring deal.

This is as stupid as the "We're not trading Luol Deng for one of the 10 best basketball players of all time" crap the Bulls pulled last time a potential huge trade was discussed. Joakim freaking Noah is not untouchable! I hope they are just saying this to start bargaining high because they think they can keep Noah and still swing Melo.

You're underrating how much Melo's presence on the floor opens up opportunities for his teammates in addition to his own scoring

No, I'm not. I played basketball; I know how floor spacing works.

I said earlier on the page that I'd probably go for the Deng & Noah trade. All I was responding to was the idea that Melo was currently a top 5-7 player in the NBA, right now. As good as he is at scoring, that's pretty much all he provides, elite as he is at it.

You played basketball so you know how NBA floor spacing works? I'll quickly tell you how it works - move everybody out of the way and let Anthony whup his man. He is not a bad rebounder. Only Gerald Wallace had a ton more as a SF last year. Deng and LeBron, the only other two ahead of him, were only half a rebound a game ahead. Now that the Bulls have a top-5 rebounder in Boozer, he will be cleaning up. If Noah somehow stays and the trade is made, you have two of the top-seven rebounders and you don't need Melo to do that. Now Melo's defense is suspect, but I wouldn't doubt Thibodeau could help turn that around, especially on a team he really wants to be on.

So you probably would trade Deng for Carmelo straight up? Any GM in the league would make that trade within one second without a second thought.

I hope Bulls' fans don't fall into the trap that because they like a guy personally and are familiar with him that somehow his value to the team is increased more than it should be. The fact is that the Bulls are closer to a championship with Carmelo Anthony, even losing Deng and Noah, than without him. I think they can compete with any team in the league if they make that trade.

At the time the Kobe deal was being considered the Lakers were pretty mediocre/bad compared to what they're doing now. The thought was that by giving up some combination of Hinrich, Deng, Gordon, Thomas, etc. that we'd just be swapping their situation for ours. Rose wasn't in the picture, Noah was an unknown. It looks worse in retrospect because Deng and Kirk had a bad couple of years and we never got any better. You put Kobe on a team with Nocioni as your #2, a headcase Noah, and Duhon at PG and you're probably not all that good.

I'm not sure that many people were going to be traded with Deng. The team the Bulls have now has a very solid supporting cast to go along with Rose and Boozer even without Noah. The Bulls have a 1B guy with Rose who could become an all-out stud someday. But to get anywhere in the east you need a big boy now and Anthony is that type of player.
