WTF?

As the Bulls and Heat continue dumping salary, each team seems to be dancing to the tune of William Wesley, a close advisor to James. Wesley is telling people that James will leave Cleveland for Chicago and bring Chris Bosh with him.

"He's up out of there," Wesley said about Cleveland.

"We're going to Chicago and Chris Bosh is coming too," said Wesley.

are those quotes legit? did WWW really say that?

nevermind. i found the yahoo article they were referencing, and those aren't real quotes. it's from this excerpt

To listen to World Wide Wes, LeBron will never look back on Cleveland. “He’s up out of there,” is the way he tells it to people, but LeBron’s Akron crew has to tsk-tsk such public talk because they all live in Northeast Ohio, and maybe always will. “We’re going to Chicago,” William Wesley tells people, “and Chris Bosh(notes) is coming, too.”

figured those couldn't have been actual quotes. realgm does that a lot. annoying.

so this magical July 1st date for signing FA's is actually July 8 now, right?

Teams can talk to FA's on July 1 and discuss contracts but can't officially sign them until the 8th. It's been that way forever.

We'll have a good idea of who's going where long before July 8.

Posted
don't they often agree to deals in principle before the 8th though?

that week between the 1st and 8th is going to be wild.

Yes. Last year, the Pistons agreed in principle with Gordon and Villanueva on July 1st and then signed them immediately on July 8th.

I don't think we're going to have to wait too much longer, really.

It's pretty awful writing to put those in quotation marks and not have them be real quotes. That's just sloppy ethics.

I trust Woj... probably the best NBA writer around right now. He would paraphrase if he meant to paraphrase.

All that phrasing tells me is that it wasn't said to him... so take that FWIW... somebody(ies) has told him that's what he said, IMO.

Even with all the cap space the Bulls have cleared, to get LBJ and Bosh wouldn't both have to take a little less than they could get elsewhere (not including their current teams)? I thought I read that even without Hinrich the Bulls wouldn't have enough space to offer two max contracts.

yeah they're still like 2 million short of cap space for 2 max guys

Yeah, but it wouldn't be very hard to work out a sign and trade to make up the difference. For instance, Toronto wants a sign and trade for Bosh, it wouldn't be difficult to offer preferably James Johnson but if not Taj Gibson and a 1st round pick as their compensation for helping us sign Bosh at full max value.

Prior to yesterday's trade, we'd have had to beg them or a 3rd team to take Deng or Hinrich, which wouldn't make any sense for Toronto.

Also, between now and July 8th, we could probably find a taker for James Johnson.

Makes sense. Seems to be what they are setting up for. Would be nice to have the Bulls and Hawks be relevant at the same time again.

To have the UC rockin' like Patrick Kane's bed would be a financial boom for Chicago. I hope it happens. To think about the possibility that come the start of the 2010-11 NHL/NBA seasons Chicago could have both the reigning Stanley Cup Champions and a Bulls roster that incudes but not limited to James and Bosh........................................... oh were was I? Oh yeah, would be unbelievable.

Excuse me, while I change my pants.

I still think we're short dollars wise in that scenario. Any first round pick we trade isn't going to help our cap number and Gibson/Johnson don't make enough. I don't think even Gibson AND Johnson make enough.

Pretty sure I saw that if James Johnson is shipped out, we'll have enough for two max contracts. First round picks make around $3 million, I believe.

Exactly. That's what I've been reading too. And the 1st rounder was just further incentive for Toronto to help us with the sign and trade and has no financial bearing in the proposal.

This is what was posted on realgm

Assuming a 56.1 million dollar cap, and the Bulls sign one max guy:
Max guy: $16,568,908
Luol Deng $11,345,000
Derrick Rose $5,546,160
Joakim Noah $3,128,536
James Johnson $1,713,600
Taj Gibson $1,117,680
Roster hold $473,604
Roster hold $473,604
Roster hold $473,604
Roster hold $473,604
Roster hold $473,604
Total $41,787,904

Remaining for final FA: $14,312,096

So yeah we'd be 500K short.

Were are you getting $3 million? One site I've been to had JJ making roughly 1.5 mill last yr, and around 1.7 mill next yr. The only time I see Johnson and for that matter Gibson making $3 mill is in their final year of their contracts. The only players from Johnson/Gibson class making $3 mill plus are the top 4 picks. Right now Johnson is on the books for 2010-11 for $1.7 mill.

Simple solution - convince the Clippers or Kings to take Deng.

Ideally that Deng for Pietrus/Gortat rumored trade would save us 500k instead of cost us 300k
