Multiple sources tell the Tribune that during a Monday morning news conference, the Cubs and White Sox will announce a new tradition -- a trophy (and the public bragging rights) to the club which wins the annual city series between them. We're told a tiebreaker is in place should the teams split the six games 3-3.

Ugh.

They should go the bet route instead.

If the Cubs lose, fans have to be called yuppies and buy $6 beers. If the Sox lose, fans will have to get tattoos and go shirtless to games.

I was going to say if the Sox win, Cubs fans have to grow mullets, and if the Cubs win, Sox fans have to get a job.

Get it? Because Sox fans are all unemployed (and likely homeless!)

If they want to do this, just give the White Sox the trophy and let them display it at the cell. It apparently means a lot more to them.

Better yet, it's got corporate sponsorship by BP!

details are in the press release, which is up on the front page @ 312.

Get rid of interleague, please.

Why? Interleague play is great. I love seeing teams and players who I don't ordinarily get to see. The NFL, NBA, and the NHL all have "interleague play" so to speak. Why is it so bad for baseball? It's just crap like this trophy that needs to end.

The White Sox fans care far more about the Cubs than the Cubs fans do about the White Sox.

this is kind of dumb but ultimately pointless, just the thing to get all the SUPARFANZ rabid about how terrible it is

The White Sox are about as far from a "rival" as you can get for the Cubs. They are in a different division, in a different league, and play the Cubs 6 games a year. In the grand scheme of things, the White Sox are meaningless to the Cubs.

Plus, having frequented White Sox games, there is a lot of apparel being sold outside Sox games that is strictly "Cub hate" apparel. The reverse is not true.

From general observation, here's how it seems to work:

- The White Sox and Brewers fans have a weird inferiority complex with the Cubs.

- The Cubs fans have a weird (but understandable) inferiority complex with the Cardinals.

These aren't 100% absolutes, but definitely what you see from the average fan.

Just not a fan. Outside of a select few match ups it's not terribly interesting and it's just yet another thing that complicates and already very complicated schedule. I always preferred it that the two leagues didn't meet until the WS.

Am I the only one that is putting most of the blame on the Ricketts family. I am overall very happy with them but they seem like they are throwing tradition out the window in favor of making more money. They say they will put all profits into the team but somethings aren't worth ruining just to make a bit more money. I'm not sure this is one of those things because I don't care too much one way or the other. I don't like the idea of creating a trophy just so we can sell sponsorship which seems to be what they have done.

Maybe the Cardinals and Royals will follow suit and battle for a Golden Jug of Moonshine or something. Or a gold record of Larry the Cable Guy's comedy album? A platinum trailer hitch ... Edited by GhostRunner
