It's very debatable as to whether or not the Cubs are "close" winning a WS this year (they're not), and it's very debatable whether or not Castro would make the team better at this point.

Well they are a borderline Wild Card team. Once you are in and have a good starting staff, anything can happen.

I'm not willing to throw everything up against the wall for THIS year at the possible expense of ruining(or at least setting back) a kid who can potentially be a centerpiece for the Cubs for the next 12-15 years. Live to fight another day. The risk is greater than the reward here right now. Especially with Theriot hitting very well currently. Come back to this question at the All Star break, let's see where we are, how Castro looks, and whether or not Theriot is still hitting competently at that point. If things have changed with Theriot, Castro looks like he can handle it, and the Cubs are still in the Wild Card hunt at that point, go for it.

But not right now.

The only way it makes sense to bring up Castro is if he's a lock to out-produce Theriot at SS or to out-produce the current 2B combo...and he is very far from that right now.

I dont know if its any more or less likely than the chances that Theriot continues to produce at his current pace (very unlikely). I tend to think he'd be at least as good offensively and he would be an upgrade defensively.

I think you're overstating the odds of a player that young and that inexperienced being able to come up and produce right away in the bigs. It would obviously be fantastic if he did come out and out produce guys like Theriot, but odds are he probably wouldn't even match typical Theriot production for most of the season, if at all this year.

Actually he has to outproduce the Font/Baker combo since Theriot would just move over.

Applies to them, too. I'd be stunned if Castro outproduced them if he was called up soon.

From BP's John Perrotto:

Cubs general manager Jim Hendry acknowledges that Double-A shortstop Starlin Castro will be in the major leagues at some point this season, but those close to the situation believe he could make his debut by the end of this month, with Ryan Theriot moving from shortstop to second base.

Not sure where the info is coming from.

so do you carry three 2B, or does Baker get cut?

Unless they make a trade probably the former. Baker can do the things that Tracy does and is also more versatile. I see it as pretty likely that one of the 3 is traded though (Fontenot, Baker, or Tracy) even if it is just for a PTBNL.

the cubs are the little kid who finds his Christmas present under his parents' bed three days after thanksgiving, and plays with it and breaks it before they even get home.

Haha. True story.

So, I am guessing we are trading one of our three second basemen for a reliever then?

Some of you probably already saw this story, but I just stumbled across it. Bleacher Report said two months ago that we need to trade Castro ASAP because he is basically Andres Blanco, Jr.

How do people get paid to write stuff this ridiculously foolish? Writer acknowledges Starlin is 6 years younger but chooses to completely ignore that in every other facet. This is the kind of stuff I would expect to find over on the cubs.com message board.

Pretty sure people don't get paid to write for bleacher report. And it shows.

If we're calling up Castro either way (don't really agree with that) then getting a decent reliever for Baker or Tracy would be pretty decent return, I think. Especially considering we traded A-ball pitcher Al Albuquerque just last year to get Baker.

I'd rather keep Fontenot and platoon him with Theriot, though.

I can't see anybody giving up anything of value for either of them.

There is no way we get any relief pitcher, or any other player, that has any value/talent/worth for just one of Baker, Fontenot, or Tracy. We'd have to at least include a minor leaguer or two that had a decent ceiling.

I agree. I took A-Cal's comment as sarcasm that we'd be acquiring a reliever and was pointing out that a reliever would be good return for either of those two. We could possibly get a boom or bust A-ball prospect for either. Baker might possibly fetch somebody maybe like Kyler Burke, but not as good as he was when he came over for Barrett. I doubt Tracy would fetch anything more than a PTBNL, if that.

Yeah, I am pretty much thinking Theriot will be a goner.

I really think they'll keep Theriot. They like him too much and I don't think he'd net enough to move him. He'll probably move over to second and platoon with Fontenot (I hope) and we'll move either Tracy or Baker.
