These games happen. Just blows that one of them had to happen in game 1.

This is how I feel. The good thing about baseball, is that it is simply one game in a very long season. The bad thing is that considering the pitching match ups, this should have been a very winnable game for the Cubs.

Seriously? The W-L doesn't show it, but Lowe has been hell to deal with in his limited action against the Cubs.

Bleh, let's just play better Wednesday. Win one of these Atlanta games. Just don't start out on a big losing streak.

Today doesn't kill me.

Samardzija is so overrated.

Not really. Pretty much everyone thinks he sucks.

Except the only people who get a say in the matter.

Exactly what I meant. Well put.

Before the game: terrified of the bullpen

After the game: terrified of the bullpen

On the positive side, Jeff Samardzija really did look like a pitcher, and that is very profound.

Don't you see? This proves they were right all along, we NEED Sean Marshall in the bullpen

the thing about samardzija is that we skimped and drafted colvin so we could afford them and they both suck. Super. Somehow Colvin is going to hit .250 for his career and never walk and he's going to be the bright side of those two picks.

god i hate jim hendry and wilken and my father and i hate my life. im gonna go pick a fight.

i discussed this in the game thread, but $10M is what you pay for college talents who are more or less sure bets - prior (okay he got injured, but before that he was awesome), pedro alvarez, david price, wieters, teixeira, strasburg, etc. basically, some of the most talented, accomplished college baseball players in the last 25 years. not a guy who had decent numbers and played wide receiver.

i'm all for dropping big dollars in the draft, but do it on guys who drop because of signability concerns or because you're drafting highly-rated guys early in the first round. not because you're buying a guy away from another sport. classic cobs.

Is it sad I wasn't surprised by anything? I actually called Heyward's homer and a couple of the other miscues. Typical.

Haha, same. I called Heyward's homer, and Z's overthrow tht led to a run and also Lee's overthrow. It's comical, really.

You called 2 overthrows?

It's not that hard if you predict "bad things" to happen on every play, you can claim credit when "bad things" happen occasionally.

Three goats:

1. Ryan Theriot - Responsible for 5 outs with the bat, and 2 free outs with the glove today. Not a great game.

2. Jeff Samardzija - Just goes to show the kind of day when you give up 6 runs in 1/3 of an inning and you were only the second worst pitching performance of the day. Just had nothing today from the outset. Or the last year or so.

3. Carlos Zambrano - Unlucky a bit in the first inning, somewhat the victim of bad D (some from himself, which should totally count as earned), but couldn't miss bats today outside of walks, and never could get it together.

Three silver linings:

3. Aramis Ramirez - 2 hits including a HR gives hope his shoulder isn't causing problems.

2. Marlon Byrd - A brief moment of excitement from his 3-run HR in the first, and the victim of possibly the cheapest DP we'll see this year.

1. Sean Marshall - When 2 of your teammates combine for 1.2 innings and 14 runs, going 2.2 innings, not allowing a baserunner, and collecting 5 Ks makes your performance look that much better in comparison. Unfortunate they couldn't use him for another couple innings, but they may need him later this week for a couple innings.

That first list should have fontenot in it, he looksx like he is right back where he left off last year-mediocre

Bad game all around after the first inning and then blown call. Sat in that section of the outfield right where that play happended and it was clear the ball was dropped. Was certain after the ump conference the call would be overturned but no such luck. And the Braves fans were absolutely brutal. Trash talkin drunks and just being obnoxious toward some of the Cubs fans. It was a long ride back to Columbia after that game...

Agreed. I had friends getting worked up over their teams losing yesterday. It's the first game of the season. There's still 161 to go. Chill out.
