But they weren't. And that's why we don't credit or debit the pitcher for what happens on balls in play.

 

It was a bad inning that got turned into an awful inning by bad luck, but let's not pretend it wasn't a bad inning. 30% of the batters he faced were either walked or homered. With average BABIP luck, he gives up two hits, so that puts 5 of the 10 men he faced on base.

Just a reminder, the cubs lost the opener in both 2007 and 2008 and lost the first 2 in 2008. In 2006 they slaughtered the reds, just saying opening day has little to do with the rest of the year.
