I'm spending my evening studying, but I've been following the gametracker and walked into this conversation. We can't fire Bruce, simply because no one will take this job who we would want. Your expectations are out of whack, we aren't IU, we aren't Kansas, we aren't Duke, UCLA or Kentucky. No one is leaving a good gig in a major conference to come here.

As bad as Bruce has been, and as much as I hate him for what he did to the program, firing him at this point will not improve the program. What more do you want from him? We know he is a good coach, he's picked up his recruiting, just give him a chance.

Anyways, since I'm curious who would be on your short list.

Wait, are you serious? What he did to the program? Yeah, getting to the national championship was a black eye for the program.

What has happened since then? Besides that huge win over Air Force?

Struggles in recruiting, inexplicably finishing 2nd in the Big Ten the following year with just Dee, finishing second in the Big Ten in 2009 with just about nobody talented on the roster.

It's inexplicable, Weber was a fantastic game coach for 5 years, and now that he's actually recruiting, the meatheads think he can't coach.

I think you would be suprised at who we could get. The natrual allure of Chicago is enough to draw in some looks. I'd really like Lon Kruger back. I loved Lon.

Lon couldn't recruit Chicago at all

I've never bought into him as a great coach. I think his version of the motion offense sucks and hasn't been great since he didn't have an All American running it. He refuses to press at all eventhough we have the athletes and depth that scream for it. I also hatre he doesn't ever use a zone even though it does work ask the Cuse. In fact, had we played it just a bit against UNC in '05 and not allow Fatty McFat to kill us by himself down low, we probably win a national title. And for both of those second place finishes he won one tourny game. Congrats Bruce you were lucky enough to come into the conference when it was way down.

Neither can Bruce. Jerrence can though.

Oh you know, not winning a tournament game in 5 years. Acting like a total ass bag cry baby over the Eric Gordon situation. Allowing Jamar Smith to remain on the team. Bruce has done PLENTY to give the program a bad name. His tenure has been troubled and controversial to say the least. Its about wins and losses and if he doesn't start winning soon, he needs to be gone.

McCamey, Richmond, and DJ: 20-36

Everyone else: 3-29

DMac is a beast. I'll give Bruce this. He can develop the crap out of a talented point guard.

I'm guessing he's referring to the 16-19 season in 07-08 and choking away late game leads in the tourney to Washington and Va Tech. Although Illinois certainly has had some shitty luck with the whole Jamar Smith debacle and Gordon decommittment. Heck, even getting Quinton Watkins to qualify in '07 would have helped.

I can't believe an Illinois fan thinks he acted like an ass bag crybaby over IDKWTI. Can you name me anything that he did that you'd deem cry-babyish? Walking away from a proven cheater who stole a committed player from him?

Yeah I don't blame him for that at all. Everything else though I agree with.

The Gordon situation was crap. Gordon screwed the program in 07-08.

Jamar Smith got booted from the team soon after Bruce gave him a last chance.

Bruce has done PLENTY to give the program a fantastic name, and is now recruiting as well or better than practically anyone before him, especially from Chicago. His tenure has only been troubled and controversial if you completely ignore 2005, the coaching he did with little talent from 2007-2009, and the talent he's been able to bring in since.

I'm not advocating firing him, at this point it would be dumb. I just think we need to look at his tenure and recognize the good with the bad. Things are looking up now, but he needs to come up with results.

Its the same argument over and over. If you want to talk about his coaching job in 2007-2009 you have to recognize that it was his own doing. We've missed the tourney in two of the past three years. Bruce only won a tournament game in the first three years of his tenure. Tell me that is not a failure at Illinois. I like what he's put together now, and I support him (presently) but he's got to produce.

you'd almost have to hire jerrance howard or it's back to the drawing board in regards to recruiting. and since illinois doesn't cheat nor would cheating be tolerated by the administration, alumni, or fans, it would be a long, painful climb back to respectability.

this whole conversation is absurd. people calling for bruce's job don't understand how hard he's worked to get highly-ranked, smart, honest kids to come to illinois and likely take for granted the 2011 recruiting class. newsflash, that class would be gone and we'd be scrambling to hit up 2 star talent.

i ain't goin back there, brother, i ain't goin back to the days of stan simpson or nuthin, and i won't watch if we sell our souls to become kentucky or kansas. the guys who want bruce gone are crazy.

It's too early in the season for this many games like that.

Apparently they were using a women's ball for the first 7 minutes today

WHAT?!?

Yep. Apparently McCamey and Richmond both pointed it out to them and they told them to keep playing. Those refs should be suspended for not catching that. It's an obvious difference.

That's just bizarre. How quickly did those two point it out to the refs before they told them to play on?

If I go to play at the Rec center next week and someone hands me a women's ball I'm immediately noticing it and asking why. The ref should have recognized it at the tip and made the change.

Just saw on another board that it was Mike Sanzere on their crew tonight. That little goof has been doing Big Ten games for years and probably officiating college basketball for over 2 decades and he can't tell the difference between a men's and women's ball? He's awful so I guess it's not terribly surprising but come on.

You guys act like Illinois is Kansas. With all due respect to the program but it's definitely a step below. As an outsider, I feel like Webber has done a great job. Even considering firing him would be a horrilbe idea.

A great job would be getting Illinois to the Kansas level. There's no reason they can't be.

I can't wait (well, yeah I can) until Illinois loses to Ohio State or MSU. FIRE WEBER!!!!!!!!!!

He's a good coach and now he's recruiting well. They have a team that should make the Sweet 16 this year and people are saying he should be fired? Dear God.

I read back through the last couple pages trying to figure out what sparked this little diatribe on Weber and still have no idea. I was thinking they lost to Oakland at first, but then saw it was just one of those games where they just flew halfway across the country and are probably in the middle of or about to start finals and were just a little less focused than you might like.

Anyway, firing Weber at this point would be monumentally stupid. He's fine until Jerrance goes elsewhere and then he might have some issues again unless the bridges have been built to the Chicago recruits and he can keep getting guys, but I'm skeptical of that.

Whoever said his version of the motion offense isn't all that great is right. They run way too much of the stand around and throw up a shot at the last minute crap. They're really going to struggle next year without a true PG to bail them out like DMac does all the time.
