So Michael Jordan isn't a professional but he isn't an amateur either?

What do you call such a person? The NCAA needs a word for it. This is the sort of thing I was getting at--these bylaws lack rigor and inevitably get applied arbitrarily over the years.

In theory, Usain Bolt could stop being a millionaire sprinter and go play college football anywhere in America while some guy scratching out a living playing obscure European pro basketball can't play college basketball. Why is one ok and one not?

Are engineers stopped from returning to college for further engineering education because they're already making a living as an engineer? What's the difference?

I think the public reflexively takes the NCAAs bylaws as fair and sound when they have no real, logical hurdles to overcome.

To what extent should this logic be carried out. Can Lebron play for Kentucky on his off days?

Lebron is still being paid as a professional basketball player on his off days so no.

I don't know post-professional? I've never heard somebody argue that somebody who has played professionally could be considered an amateur.

Am I understanding correctly that you'd be ok with the NCAAs becoming an NBA old-timers league?

The NCAAs bylaws aren't what's holding back college basketball from becoming an NBA old-timers league. If those rules evaporated over night it's not like Michael Jordan would immediately signal his intent to play for UNC.

But as a pure thought experiment, yeah, I'd be ok with it.

Snood...what are you hearing with Josiah Turner's recruiting? I know he has an official to KU for their Midnight Madness thingy.

Tennessee just docked Pearl $1.5 million in future pay among other pro-active self-regulations.

Feel pretty good about turner, though UA and UCLA are right in there. IF he gets to our late night, I like our chances.

It feels like UCLA has a lot of momentum all of a sudden and his mom has been talking UCLA up and referring to them as the local school (you know, since Sacramento is *only* 400 miles from campus).

It does sound like there's a legit chance he might commit on one of his visits, so if he makes it to KU's thing, you gotta think he'll be a Jayhawk. He's a real pivotal recruit for UCLA given their dire situation at point guard.

lol - so we know our coach broke rules seriously enough to take a penalty of $1.5M...but we're going to hang onto him anyway.

Great!

I can't believe Bruce Pearl would bend the rules. Afterall he felt so strongly about them being upheld in the past he was willing to illegaly tape record a teenager's phone call at 2 a.m.

He needs to contact Sampson on how to cheat better.

Dana O'Neil apparently has no idea what happened in 1990: Pearl incident 'ironic'

Apparently blowing the whistle on a rival program by secretly and illegally taping a teenager is a heroic deed.

Somehow, knowing that someone out there interprets the events that way makes me hate Pearl even more.

I didn't know that was possible.

the Kanter decision is very interesting to me. the ruling will be the first of its kind (whatwith the new rule itself). a lot of people in my neck of the woods have this big conspiracy theory (as a lot of Kentucky fans do with most things) about how the Turkish GM was lying to Pete Thamel about the amount paid and all that. Thamel's story didn't reveal anything the NCAA didn't already know, but it revealed a lot of things that the general public didn't know. personally, (this could very well be the koolaid talking) i think the situation is no different than a student getting monthly expenses at a prep school, or even a full ride at a major university. everything i've read says that Instanbul is an expensive city to live in. with Thamel's story coming out, and all of the backlash from sports journalists since, i don't think Kanter will be declared elligible, though. i do think the ruling will set the precedent for future incoming foreign players in Kanter's situation.

i was all giddy when UK hired Calipari, but that feeling is starting to wear off. if a major violation(s) are discovered, i think the NCAA will hit UK with the death penalty, with UK being a repeat offender and all.

Fixed for ya

NO chance Kentucky actually gets the death penalty. It's been about 20 years since the last major violations in basketball. Postseason ban and scholarship reductions I could see, but not the death penalty.
