Interesting story about Brandon Knight. Apparently he did not sign a LOI to play at Kentucky...

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/michael_rosenberg/04/29/knight/index.html?eref=sihp

I've been wondering for a while why any top recruit ever signs an LOI. There's almost no benefit to them, when they can get aid promised that doesn't bind them to the school.

top recruits commit to top schools and top schools take those who sign. kentucky has an army of brandon knights itching to take their money. don't want to lose out on the highest bidder, you know?

Brandon Knight could call any school in America right now and say, "I want to play there." It wouldn't matter if that school had open schollies or not, they'd make room. Any school.

It doesn't make sense for these kids to bind themselves to a school without any escape hatch. Brandon's playing it the right way for a top player, imo.

Is it totaled with Brian Carwell's dying body in it?

Probably, that's how he was able to afford it.

that was a chevette, we can't afford the nice cars here in illinois that they can in the bustling walled, megaopolic republic that is the the entire state of kansas

all built on the backs of the wheat moguls and sunflower mafia

I thought it was discounted cause the Morris twins shot out all the windows.

Only after they borrowed/"bought" it from not a booster Scot Pollard and loaded it up with 14 year old girls and went drving at 3 in the morning.

I don't know how they could operate independently of each other. BCG just wouldn't care for his crops being thinned out.

Illinois offered Jared Uthoff from Cedar Rapids, IA in the '11 class today. I posted about him a couple pages back when Indiana offered. Butler has now also.

The Illinois one surprises me. He's a 6'8 guy who is way too skinny to play inside but I question if he's athletic enough to guard any 3's in the Big Ten. He's kind of a skinnier, slightly less athletic version of Gordon Hayward.

It looks like Walter Offutt is coming to IU as long as the financial aid situation works out. He was just barely a top 100 guy coming out of high school. I have no idea what he might have after all this time, but considering that he's walking on (because he already played at Ohio State and so cannot take a scholarship) it's pretty much a no risk situation.

Between this and the Negedu situation, this is definitely not the normal recruiting process so far this spring. That doesn't even begin to mention the other 8-10 players that have also been possibilities in the last month.

So many of these 2010 kids IU tried to get in on at the last minute, the odds were against them despite Crean's best efforts. So to get a couple of kids like Offutt and Negedu who actually do want to be Hoosiers, I'll take 'em. Offutt seems like a nice addition for a walk on and Negedu obviously has some talent and could help us.

The class of 2011 is where it is at right now. If Crean can get Jeremiah Davis and Cody Zeller then I think things will really start to fall in place in terms of subsequent recruiting classes. If not.........well I'm prepared for a lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth on IU boards if we don't get those kids. And to be honest I'd be disappointed too.

Gee this could be the Bill Cole redux.

I really don't see why we are offering this kid unless we aren't gonna get some of the other guys we are in on for '11

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Offutt won't be eligible til second semester of '10-'11 and then only have that semester, plus the '11-12 season remaining. I can't imagine him having much of an impact. But as you said, it's a walk on so no harm done.

I don't know what to think about the Negedu situation, I know he's been cleared by the doctors, but I'd still be a little nervous about him. Additionally, I can't imagine he's going to be the same player he was after his medical issues. Does Negedu have to sit out a season due to transfer, or it assumed he'll be granted a waiver? Either way you have him using a scholarship through the '12-'13 season at least. For a team that's already overloaded with questionable players taking up scholarships(Matt Roth for a 5th year????) it doesn't seem worth the risk. It also seems odd to say that you like them cause they want to play at Indiana when they're on their 3rd and 2nd schools respectively.

Uthoff, I know next to nothing about, but yeah he sounds less than encouraging when you consider how loaded the state of Illinois is in '11, not to mention the state of Indiana in '12.

UW wins appeal on behalf of Brust

I hope this doesn't turn into a regular occurrence now. It would get extremely annoying to see kids bail on their LOI.

Most kids gets let out of their LOI when a coach leaves/is fired. The only time I can recall it not happening was Satan down in Knoxville(and I'm not even sure of that one). The appeal was due to the Big Ten no-transfer rule, and I think they got it right. It's not a transfer, it's an uncommitted kid.

I think they got this one right because of the coaching change. My hope is it doesn't open the doors for kids to go from Michigan to OSU or Northwestern to Illinois for other reasons. I like the rule as a whole.
