The winter games are ten times better than the summer games.

I know, right? Who wants to see stuff where people compete based on time or other tangible factors. I'd much rather see a panel of judges score the participants arbitrarily.

Basically, if it's not a race or curling, it's a waste of time. Which is like 80% of the Winter games.

That's really not that much different from the Summer Games.

Basketball, Softball, Swimming, Track and Field, Boxing, Tennis, Volleyball, etc. There are far more games that fit TT's description in the summer games.

Seriously!?! The only judged events in the winter olympics are figure skating, freestyle skiing, and snowboarding, everything else is time or point based. The summer olympics have gymnastics, diving, and synchronized swimming as judged events with the others being point/time based. Its pretty much the same. Given that, I'd rather watch people wipeout while going a bajillion miles an hour down a mountain or on a bobsled WAY more than watch people run in circles, swim laps, throw javelins, row a boat, etc.

There are also far fewer events in the winter games. To each his own, though.

Which is why you don't watch those events.

Hockey, curling, speed skating, bobsled, luge and many ski events rule.

Honestly, I think I like the Winter Olympics more because most, if not all, of the events are the most important event for that sport. Heck, even olympic hockey is a bigger deal for that sport than olympic basketball, baseball, softball or tennis is for their respective sport.

As for judged events...gymnastics, anyone?

FYI, for all of those complaining about Randy Kesler and calling him, soft, a poser, a coward and a wuss, just remember he is on Team USA. :banghead:

NBC is bumping the US-Canada hockey game on 2/21 to MSNBC so it can show ice dancing. And they were pretty unapologetic about it -- women watch the olympics and women like ice dancing.

Guess I don't care. I have MSNBC. It's just sort of embarassing for the NHL's broadcast partner to throw them out on their ear.

I was hoping that would be on CNBC, I don't think I get MSNBC in HD, and CNBC is supposedly the hockey and curling channel.

Oh, that's a good point. I don't know if I have MSNBC in HD. Nope, not on Directv. CNBC is in HD, but not MSNBC. Go figure.

Hopefully they will have one of those dedicated 4-5 channel blocks all in HD like they do when wimbledon, us open or other major event is on.

The website says everything is in HD for the olympics

Watch NBC Universal's coverage of the Vancouver Games on DIRECTV in breathtaking High-Def †. See up to four channels — NBC, CNBC, USA and MSNBC — at the same time on DIRECTV's Sports Mix Channel. Enjoy interactive features, including NBC's Team USA updates, and enhance your Olympic experience with

daily highlights and full-length event replays on

DIRECTV on DEMAND.

Interesting. And they will have one channel with four things on at once (like the NFL Mix Channel) and the dedicated channels.

Not a good start....

A men's Olympic luger from the former Soviet republic of Georgia died Friday after crashing during a training run on the world's fastest track.

Nodar Kumaritashvili lost control of his sled, went over the track wall and appeared to hit a steel pole near the finish line at the Whistler Sliding Center.

Posted
I always felt luge was lacking more giant, steel poles near the finish line.

Seriously, whose idea was that?

Especially on the fastest track in the world. They say some ppl have topped 90mph in training.

Posted

Is it crazy to ask if they will cancel that event?

I don't know enough about the start -- is there something they can do to the condition of the track to slow it down or otherwise make it safer?

Posted
That crash was ugly. Deadspin had the video up before the guy died but it seems they've pulled it down since. N/M its in a different post now.

No, it's still up. Holy [expletive].

Posted

That's a good question. There already were competitors who voiced concerns about the extreme conditions of the track before the events of today. I'm not sure if there's another track available off-site or something.

Posted
yeah there is no way i'm watching that video.

at least throw some [expletive] padding around that steel pole.

That pole couldve been made out of cheetos, it wouldnt have mattered
