Your next former cubbie coaching staff?

Ryne Sandberg - Manager

Greg Maddux - GM

LOL.

I could see this, and I think their baseball acumen would outweigh the obvious meatball fan pleasing factor

Careful. You'll get run out of here with pitchforks and torches if you so much as even mention the possibility of Sandberg becoming manager.

yeah its annoying how people dont want a terrible manager with outdated philosphies to run the cubs major league team. these are the same clowns who ran dusty out of town.

and this seems like it could easily just be a marketing gimmick for new owners to reach out to somebody the crowd loved

Funny, I think the only benefit of Sandberg taking over when Lou leaves is the meatball fan pleasing factor. At least until the Cubs are back to the old ways of being out of the race in June. Then they'll turn on him.

Maddux as assistant GM? Odd place to start. He seems like he's observant about the game, but as has been said, can he evaluate talent? I guess he wouldn't have to be great at it if... and it's a big if...he trusts his scouts and they know what they are doing. If he can sell the team and his philosophy to attract FAs would be a big part of the job. Along with having a good philosophy to use to build the franchise.

How does anyone know if he'll be any good? I'm at least willing to give the guy a chance. Maybe he'll prove to be way better than Hendry.

Love having maddux in the fold. Pretty much every one of our young pitchers who was around when he was last here said (repeatedly) how helpful he was. He has coaching written all over him imo.

Having Greg on in an ancillary position with minimal responsibility will how his aptitude for talent evaluation to be assessed with little risk. It may be a PR move, but it's a no risk, potentially high reward situation, if he turns out to have great aptitude for GM-type work.

Either way, you can't say anything bad about it.

You don't know...I actually thought Paxson would be a good GM :(

OK, this move I like. Does it actually mean anything? I love the idea of Maddux being more involved in the team's management/coaching once Lou and Hendry are gone.

Isn't Randy Bush in the same position? Or is he just the assistant GM? Because if he has the same role, Bush has been mentioned for possible GM jobs.

Bush is Assistant GM, not Assistant to the GM.

Ok, I wasn't sure which he was. I knew he was a Hendry assistant, but wasn't sure of the exact capacity.

Same title, different role. Randy Bush is more involved with the minor league aspect of talent evaluation while I assume Maddux will be more responsible for the major league evaluation. I can't see Maddux taking on the same travel schedule of Randy Bush who typically follows the Cubs minor league teams.

Good move. I love the fact that he will be in our organization in the event that changes are made to the coaching staff where he can fill in.

Sandberg manager and Maddux pitching coach when Lou is gone?

To be fair, isn't Billy Williams still officially an assistant to the GM?

This is just a PR move to keep former players on the team payroll. Dawson is an assistant to the GM for the Marlins.

That said, glad Mad Dog is with the Cubs instead of Braves.

That is incorrect.

Different titles.

Assistant GM and an assistant to the GM.

It'll be nice having somebody in the front office who knows a little bit about baseball. PR move or not, MadDog is the most intelligent player of his generation, and I think he could shine in a job where he finds talent.

rabble rabble Sandberg would suck as a manager and cause the Cubs to lose for another 100 years rabble rabble

Yeah, it's not like well-reasoned arguments as to why Sandberg as a manager would likely be a bad move have been posted on this board numerous times. If anything, it's the few pro-Sandberg-as-manager people who have offered little beyond the hyperbole of "HE PLAYED THE GAME THE RIGHT WAY" or "HE WAS MY FAVORITE CUB."

Sorry, you're right. Billy is a "senior advisor." Still, I don't expect Mad Dog to be at the top of every decision Hendry makes. Heck, I don't even expect Hendry to be at the top of every decision he makes.

Okay, this is clearly a well thought out argument.

Would you like to elaborate on why, exactly, you think Sandberg would make a good manager? There have been plenty of well-reasoned arguments to the negative, but I have yet to see a single logical reason as to why he would be a good choice.

Who's to say I do think he would be a good manager? I just get tired of the constant overreactions and bashing every time his name is mentioned. Quite frankly, I'd be nervous if he was hired to replace Lou after this season.
