Figured this deserved it's own thread.

Mike Leach has been fired as head football coach at Texas Tech, according to reports.

Leach allegedly twice forced receiver Adam James, after James was diagnosed with a slight concussion, to stand in a small, dark place while the rest of the team practiced. James is the son of ESPN college football analyst Craig James.

Leach's lawyer, Ted Liggett, contends that Leach did noting wrong in how Adam James was treated.

After being suspended by Texas Tech, Leach filed a temporary restraining order that would have allowed him to coach the team in the Alamo Bowl on Jan. 2.

Some observers believe that Texas Tech administrators were looking for an excuse to fire Leach and used the alleged mistreatment of James to justify his dismissal.

I'm curious as to why they were looking for an excuse. Something else must have happened prior to this given all they went through last year to keep him around.

What I read was more or less hard feelings related to contentious contract negotiations.

Especially after he flirted with the Auburn and Washington openings last season. It sounds like the situation with the player is pretty overblown (there was a coach with him in the shed at all times and you're complaining?) and Texas Tech just wanted out of the contract. They'll probably be a hefty lawsuit against them and Texas Tech will return to being a bottom dweller in the Big XII.

It'll be interesting to see both who hires Leach (they'll be getting a really good coach) and who Texas Tech hires to replace him (heard the possibility of Kevin Sumlin, though he may prefer to stay at Houston).

I'm still waiting for Leach to say it was punishment for something other than for being hurt. I would fire any coach who punishes kids for being hurt. It's not necessarily what happened but Leach has yet to say it was anything else.

Of course he hasn't said anything yet. This thing is headed to court.

If he made the kid sit in a closet for any reason for several hours I don't see how he is going to win.

I've mentioned this before but it seemed like over the years Leech started to act and even sound like Bobby Knight. I like Knight and all, but this seems like something he would do/go through.

In the age of the "timeout" punishment for kids, I don't see how that is a fireable offense.

He detained a kid in a room and would not let him out for several hours. Not exactly sure why he should be able to do that regardless.

Sounds like every test I took in college.

things have been bad there since the offseason

leach got pissed off at his bosses and has been pushing their limits all year. they want him out and he wants out, this just gave them a semi legitimate way to do it

i also hear he was owed an 800k payment on Dec. 31. I think he's going to make 400k for each year left on his contract. not bad paper to go out on a job search. He was never going to topple OU and Texas in the Big 12 anyway. They seemingly would pick off one of them per year, but let's face it, in Lubbock, you're kind of at a disadvantage.

Lubbock might be the most difficult place to play in the Big 12. Curious to see where he goes, guessing he finds a job very fast. I am not going to miss playing him at all.

I'd like to see him go to an SEC school. I don't think any jobs will open (save for the weird situation in Florida), but it'd be interesting to see how his teams (high passing, little defense) would do in a defense-oriented SEC.

What schools even have openings right now?

I don't know. I can see OU falling from grace (I lived through some rough years when in the pre-stoops era), but I don't see Texas ever falling from its perch at or near the top of the Big 12. They have a great campus, great city, great facilities, great recent history and one of the top 3 recruiting bases in america. The only team that's consistently good enough to challenge them is Oklahoma, and we've thrown up a couple of clunkers this decade, even though we've been at the top of our game.

Whats been pretty amazing with Leech is that he has done everything without really ever having a great recruiting class.

I think OU will be ok without Stoops, but I do wonder what would happen. TCU might firmly overtake them should Stoops leave.
