Good Lord.

I mean, it's great if it's true, though now I'm kinda worried he's going to be too small. I was thinking he needed to drop about 20 pounds or so.

Didn't feel this was new thread worthy, but David Schuster on the Score just reported that Soto says he has lost 35-40 pounds

Somebody is going to need to provide photographic evidence from the convention or when pitchers and catchers report in a few weeks of Soto as soon as they can find pictures of Soto. 30-40 lbs. is a lot of weight, but Soto needed to lose at least 20lbs. hopefully the 30-40 is true and he can get back to 08' form.

I confirm he was just on cbs2 chicago. He definitely looks thin, thin like ramirez did. Said he did it to surprise and show he is serious about playing.

Wow! That's very thin from where he was last year. Glad to see he put the work in and is serious about getting in the best shape possible.

Link is scrolling across the top, but here it is starts showing/talking about Soto at 37ish seconds:

Just sitting down for the Down on the Farm section. I've been waiting for this one since the convention started.

Anybody else remember when NSBB would go nuts over news/reports from the Cubs Convention? I can remember reading huge re-caps people would write about their experiences over the weekend. Now, it seems, the thing has become completely irrelevant and we, as Cub fans, are a bit more bitter, cynical, or apathetic than '03/'04/'05.

It was my first convention. I'll have a huge recap + video online before the end of night. :)

I was there again, had a blast. Wife and I each sported our NSBB shirts, but they were under hoodies much of the time (sorry, it was cold) Would've said hi had I seen you Tim.

That was when people were announcing themselves to Hendry, et al as "Joe Blow from cubbieblog.com" or somesuch and were furiously taking notes and generally treating the convention as a job.

It's a lot more fun when you aren't playing reporter.

I think part of is the obvious nature of how the Cubs aren't doing much this offseason. If there was more money to spend and a new GM it would likely be much more exciting.

Yeah, I remember long threads with photos and updates and stuff. Times have changed. And by times, I mean the team becoming less likable.

How on earth can anyone have the opinion that this team is less likeable than the one in 2006?

I think it's more that we as a fan base have become more jaded. Things started to change around 2003. After that playoff run, we were no longer satisfied just to make the postseason. 2004 disappointed, but led to increased optimism. After 2006, we were more angry, but the hiring of Lou brought the optimism back in 2007. But I think the way 2007 and 2008 ended has left us with an empty feeling. It's hard to get excited about the regular season when we want more than just regular season wins, but a lot of fans feel jaded when it comes to what the team will do in the postseason.

That being said, I'm sure those who attend the convention still get excited and pumped up. It may be that they no longer wanna run back here and share it.

I think it has much less to do with being generally jaded and much more specifically with a very lackluster 2009 and little changes to the team. The convention between 2008 and 2009 was still much more exciting despite how the season ended up.

btw - we've got two articles on the Cubs convention up from a much better author than me (Julie DiCaro) plus I've got about seven videos loaded now over at 312sports. The latest is Hendry talking about the Jake Fox for Jeff Gray trade.

Best way to keep track is to refresh the Cubs page there to see the latest. I've still got several more to post.

Great work Tim. I was a little skeptical about 312sports upon launch but I find myself increasingly going over there to read the page. Keep it up.

Thanks!

It takes a huge amount of work to get a site like that rolling, but we're developing enough credibility to attract some of the better blog authors. Considering that we started with nothing but Chuck and I (and that we have no budget) it's coming along faster than I had even hoped.

Dammit! After watching those videos, I like Hendry a little bit more. I still think he [expletive] the bed in tremendous fashion last offseason though. But, I will give him the benefit of the doubt since apparently the scouting and coaching system has become world-class under his guidance. Only time will tell, and we still have a few more years left to see what happens.
