getting rid of iowa st and kansas st would have been getting rid of dead weight... they lost one of their largest media markets and their third or fourth most prestigious football program.

Ehh. Nebraska hasn't been that important to college football in awhile.

their $49M football profit last year (4th among all programs) would argue otherwise. they aren't great any more, but much like notre dame, they're still a big deal.

Ehh. Nebraska hasn't been that important to college football in awhile. I think the last notable thing they did was piss everyone off by going to the national championship game in 2001 or so.

I was thinking about this too, but it seems the legacy or "presence" of the program has more to do with actual, present-day success. Look at ND. They haven't done [expletive] lately, but everyone is still fretting over them.

Over the last 10 years, Nebraska's CFB record is 3rd in the new Big Ten, better than PSU and UM. And which team will win more games in 2010: UM or Nebraksa?

Do you really not know why conferences covet ND football or are you just trying to sound stupid?

Did I not reference the reason in my post? And I sound stupid...

It's not like Nebraska was terrible or anything. I think most people think Pelini's got them on the right track.

They could/should have beaten Texas last year.

ND has been to 3 bowl games, including 2 BCS bowls, in the last 5 years (and were bowl-eligible and invited to a bowl in 4/5 years) and is one of the highest revenue programs in the country. You're really shocked that a conference would want to add a team like that?

Yes, playing that card sounds stupid.

For the love of god I'm not shocked at anything. For teams like ND and Nebraska, with the prestige they have, their value isn't necessarily tied to their continued and constant success on the field. That's all I was saying.

I'll speak more slowly next time.

Hahaha.... I'm not speaking of markets, nor prestige.

Yes you are. Why else would you keep bringing up Fox and ESPN?

I've said nothing about markets nor prestige in my posts. You may want to go back and re-read them. I've said how the Big 12 signing a deal with Fox takes money away from ESPN. You show me where I've mentioned markets or prestige.

The very nature of the topic encompasses markets, without a doubt. And prestige as well, since that's what drives a lot of eyeballs.

Nothing I said in my posts (re read them again) touches markets or prestige. They encompass the nature of another conference taking away money from ESPN by agreeing to a deal with Fox. Quit reaching. As a matter of fact, in a previous post WELL before I said anything about ESPN, you will see that I negated the CU market's importance to the Big 12. It's the only mention of a market in any post I've made in this topic.

you can speak as fast or slow as you like, but the more logical the better. ND and Nebraska have, for comparison's sake, been better than half the teams in the Big Ten in the last 10 years. A conference looking to improve itself might seek out teams with rabid fan bases that have prestige and recent success (being at least in the top half of its current members would likely fit this definition).

Getting ND in a conference so they can stop getting waxed in BCS games they don't deserve to be in probably helps the brand.

Better to lose in the Fiesta bowl than squeak out a win in the Emerald bowl.

Even better if you didn't have to cheat to get there.

Chip just commented on the radio that it's "official" and an announcement could be coming any moment. Confirms what I was hearing earlier. I guess my source is not garbage.

I was actually being serious.

Seeing ND obliterated in games people already resent them being in doesn't help anything.

you downplayed the population of the denver area by saying that people don't care that much about CU sports, and then said that nobody lives in nebraska so it doesn't matter that their fans are rabid and fiercely loyal. pick one argument, not two arguments that contradict each other because you want to downplay two defections from the conference you like.

But it's more about the prestige than being better than Purdue and Indiana.

Done with this.

Summary from Chip on the radio:

Not at all a bluff"...television network (didn't say which one, but it has to be FOX) stepped forward and helped everyone avoid chaos in college football.

He's taken an oath of secrecy and can't talk about which TV network it was, but it avoided "armageddon" in college football.

Big 12 not going to add new teams - TV package is built for 10 teams.

To all the skeptics on the numbers - M.B.A. types have been over it with a fine tooth comb, but this is guaranteed money for the schools. Announcement to come today.

That talk about Colorado and Nebraska population was not in the post where i was talking about ESPN. It was in a different context talking about something totally different than ESPN being worried about Fox. Guess the ESPN talk doesn't matter anyway, because it's expected that this becomes official soon.

I wasn't sure if you were serious or not. Since you are, I don't agree at all. ND doesn't (and shouldn't) give a damn about the millions of us out there who resent them. The BCS bowls are insane exposure that funnel in tons of money and recruits.

Good. I know Snood thinks otherwise, but I think this is good for KU. It was very possible they were going to get left out of the Pac-10 too, so I'll take the bird in the hand.

Being in a BCS game, even if you lose, is good for the program. Financially, for fans, for recruiting.

Cheating to get to the Emerald Bowl, or a national title game, is bad for the program. At least in my opinion. You have more direct experience, so you may feel differently.

for the record, k-state football is not on the way back. sure, they may win 7-8 games a few seasons, but as soon as snyder goes away (which will be soon), they go back to being a cupcake.

Of course it is. But being prestigious while also currently being a good football program is why conferences are after ND (or Nebraska) and not, say, Harvard or Army.

More from Chip:

CU seen as "such a nonperformer" that they were viewed as bringing 0% to the table for TV...so Big XII sold it as only one school actually lost from Big XII (Nebraska).

OU/UT may move from TX State Fairgrounds to Jerry's Taj in Dallas.

Mike Slive and SEC in College Station on Saturday, Larry Scott and Weiberg (Pac-10) in College Station on Sunday...full court press was on.

An opinion... do you know this for fact? Recruiting right now is 10x better than it was under Prince. Had Snyder not retired the first time, we probably wouldn't be having this conversation. I know mine is an opinion too, but I guarantee they don't make a hire like Prince after Snyder's gone. Think Jim Levitt or along those lines.

From the KUsports blog, and odd:

Note: This could be a couple of schools pushing an agenda, or it could be credible. But reports are starting to surface that BYU and Air Force, both of the Mountain West, are being mentioned as possible replacements for Colorado and Nebraska.

We're working hard to track this down and have calls out to the Mountain West.

Stay tuned.
