Mayweather-Pacquiao Fight

Wilson A2000

I haven't been interested in a traditional boxing fight since the late 90's. But this is one I just might find myself watching. Mayweather has reportedly signed on and Pacquiao is being sought after. Both fighters are reported to be paid a cool $40 million for the early March 2010 fight. How do you turn that down?

There was no way either of them would walk away from this type of payday.

This is the only fight that matters in boxing right now and it shoud be amazing. My only initial concern is that Floyd will see Pacquiao's power and start dancing. And he's fast enough to do it. That could make a boring fight.

anybody know what the ppv count was on the pacquiao-cotto fight? because people were saying that it would have had to be 1.5 mil for mayweather to consider it, and even then it would have been a longshot for mayweather to split the purse 50-50.

we'll see if it happens, i hope it does. i'd love to see mayweather retire undefeated after smoking him.

Pac vs. Cotto did 1.25 million buys on PPV.

And Mayweather doesn't smoke anybody. He out points and doesn't get hit. Pacquiao smokes people. And yes, this fight must happen. PBF will have a huge black mark on his career if he doesn't fight Pac.

Pacquiao will beat Mayweather. The way Manny destroyed Cotto was simply amazing. The way he has destroyed everyone before that has been amazing. I am a huge Mayweather fan, but I think he does have his weaknesses, one of them being how he can handle being battered by his opponent round after round. He hasn't experienced that. Maybe it's not a weakness. But we will find out.

I think Pacquiao knocks Mayweather out. Pacquiao is at the absolute top of his game right now. Freddy Roach has created another monster.

no, it's the opposite. pacquiao has yet to face a defensive boxer like mayweather, who will just wear him out and push him over in the 11th or 12th. mayweather is a BAAAAAAD matchup for manny.

Mayweather has never faced a southpaw as fast and explosive as Pacquiao. Zab Judah gave him trouble in the early rounds.

His shoulder roll defense won't work when he's taking punches from all angles.

This fight will be easier than the Cotto fight.

I disagree. Sulley is right, this is a bad matchup. I hate to say it because I'd like to see Manny destroy him, but I think Mayweather is fast enough to stay away from Manny and make this a boring fight. He's going to look like Corey Spinks with slightly more punching power.

This will be one hell of a fight. I can't wait. Finally, Mayweather is facing somebody legit.

We really don't know how good Mayweather really is. I've always been impressed, but the guys he's facing just aren't noteworthy enough to raise an eyebrow. We know he's a great boxer, but this will definitely be a test.

Pacquaio is coming off back to back thrashings of Hatton and Cotto. In the first round, it looked like Cotto was going to make it a really interesting fight, but Manny was just being Manny and feeling Cotto out. Manny beat and battered Cotto into submission, and Cotto isn't just significant, he was in the higher weight class. A more solid and muscular opponent.

Mayweather is definitely different than Cotto with blazing speed and quickness. But, Manny's aggressiveness and ability to absorb a punch makes him the favorite and the guy to beat in my view.

Cotto was never all that good. Has everyone forgotten about all the snoozefests that preceded his beatdown at the hands of Margarito? He was just a beneficiary of the post-Trinidad-Puerto Rican/HBO/Arum hype machine.

Mayweather may be a smaller man, but his skills are in another stratosphere compared to Cotto. Pac may have his moments, and they've probably already scheduled the rematch, but Mayweather wins this one in undramatic fashion.

I really hope this doesn't happen. I know how the dollar signs must be ringing in their ears, but this fight needs to be legit from the word go.

While it doesn't look like there is a whole lot of hope for the heavyweight class, it seems like there are a lot of quality young talented guys coming through the ranks right now that can reinvigorate the sport. A classic slugfest between Mayweather and Pacquiao with the best man winning could either help or hinder that.

Call me crazy, but I watched the Pacquiao/Cotto fight twice. I'm not so sure Mayweather has faster hands than Pacquiao, anymore. Faster feet, absolutely. But Pacquiao was throwing punches that were so fast his arms were just a blur on my 37 inch Vizio. He always had the knockout punch and he always had the ability to hit you from just about any angle. But now, he's hitting you before you even know the punch is coming. There will definitely be a party at my house for this fight. I can't wait.

What was the last fight to be hyped this much? Tyson-Lewis? Tyson-Holyfield?

I think Mayweather will win this fight, but I'm putting money on Pac

Probably something out of the Tyson-Lewis-Holyfield days. Among non-HW fights, maybe something in the Duran/SRL/Hagler/Hearns era or De La Hoya/Trinidad.

Margarito was fighting with loaded gloves in all likelihood. Cotto is (or was) a legit opponent. I mean Mayweather dodged him and he did beat Mosley. I do think he fell off the Margarito fight but he's arguably better than anyone Floyd's beaten.

Floyd Mayweather's Wiki page says that the Cotto/Pacquaio fight drew 1.25m PPV subscribers. One of only 4 non heavyweight fights and the only one of those 4 that De La Hoya was not fighting.

I agree with the original post. I've never paid for a PPV fight, because I wasn't old enough to when the last fight worth purchasing happened. I will pay whatever Comcast asks of me to see Mayweather and Pacquio

Which is what these days? I know for your regular (stupid) UFC PPVs it's $45 or $55 for HD. I'd imagine this will be upwards of $65 for HD.

I don't know. We have a bar that shows all the fights and the place is packed for the big ones. The charge a $10 cover, but even then I can eat and drink for less than $55. So I'll probably just do that. Went there for Floyd-Hatton and it was a great time.

What do you think this one could draw? 1.5 million?

Unofficially official now that Pacquiao has reportedly signed on. http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/news/story?id=4712939

I think it'd clear 2 million+ pretty easily. De La Hoya/Mayweather did 2.7 million PPV buys and this is actually a good match up.
