According to the Bears' facebook page, Brown has been released.

I really don't like this. I was hoping the Peppers signing would help the defense take a step forward, but if all he is is a replacement for Ogunleye, Brown and Gaines, I really don't think they are better.

Well, he's a far better player than any of those guys, so that gives them the strong possibility of being better on the line. All depends on how they replace the depth.

Replacing Ogunleye with Peppers gives them a strong possibility of being better on the line as a whole, replacing Ogunleye and Brown with Peppers gives them less of an improvement. And this was a bad line overall for three years. The best lines have multiple threats, the Bears have one.

I guess I'm saying that's one more than they've had since Harris got his new deal. 1 > 0.

Side note but, who would have ever guessed 3 years ago that we'd be saying stuff like "according to _____'s FB page, (legitimate news) "

Peppers is obviously the best of the group, but Alex Brown was a good football players. A Peppers, Harris, XXX, Brown line stood a chance of being quite good. Now? I have serious doubts. Just cutting Brown for budgetary reasons is a huge disappointment because Julius Peppers is grossly overpaid and this defense is still going to be bad.

I'm still rather annoyed about Brown getting released.

Can someone please give me one reason why he needed to be cut for nothing in return?

Since they elected not to tell anyone they would need to release a quality player to afford Peppers, I've got to wonder what other surprises might be coming.

Certainly Alex had no inkling; he was the most vocal Bear in support of the Peppers signing, both before and after, that I heard.

Money is it. Of course, I would have rather used that money on Alex Brown than to sign a mediocre blocking TE. I can't fault them for signing Peppers. Understand why they brought in Chester Taylor. But Manumaleuna's deal sure looks pretty prohibitive right now.

Today's move is for all the people who said, "In an uncapped year, I don't care how much they paid for Peppers cause it aint my money." The Bears are still two steps forward, one step back. But they could have been two steps forward. Have fun stopping the run with Anderson and Peppers on the corners.

I'm hoping it won't be Anderson, except situationally. But I suppose that could be a hollow hope.

Well it's gonna be Anderson or Idonije.

Happy Jay Day, Everybody!

I remember exactly where I was.

Me too. I thought Bernstein was just jerking around with the audience.

I believe Izzy would be a better every down option, with Anderson situationally rushing the passer.

Virginia wouldn't.

They surprised me with Cutler and Peppers, not to mention Ogunleye, Muhammed and Tait, so I guess it's possible. But they have issues with criminals and I'm guessing, especially domestic abusers.

Yeah...this would be the hurdle for sure.

I don't think giving up a first rounder for a top 3 (maybe the best) receiver in the league that is 26 years old is any sort of exorbitant price.

No, but it's probably an unnecessary price for a toxic relationship like they have.

First rounder? Surely he could be had for less.

Broncos have been holding out for a first rounder for him.

Yeah, I see that. Maybe I'm wrong, but I feel like his off the field issues have been significant enough to raise the risk of trading for him enough to take him below first rounder territory.

What did Boldin get traded for? A first rounder? I would have liked Boldin better and he didn't get crazy money once he signed. If they released Brown to go after a top flight receiver, I would be happy. But from what I have heard, the Bears are comfortable with their receivers. And that is exactly the problem with the Bears' front office.
