Tennessee is likely going to face Virginia Tech in the CFA Bowl, according to nearly every "source" I have read. No, it isn't a New Year's Day Bowl, but I would SO MUCH rather UT play in the CFA than the Outback. The only- and I mean ONLY- drawback I can think of is that Kiffin certainly wanted to play in South Florida in order to get more recruits around his team. Other than that, what really is the allure of the Outback?

The game kicks off at 11 am EST... or 8 am on the West Coast. CFA is an evening kickoff, and is the premiere Bowl on that day, and follows the UT/Memphis hoops game. That could mean nearly 6 straight hours of Tennessee sports on ESPN. That's great, as well. Plus (and I know that this will not be a popular sentiment here, but I really don't mean any disrespect), the opponent will be much better, and the matchup will be much more attractive nationally that having to face either Wisconsin or (yuck) Northwestern. Just nothing at all attractive about playing either of those teams, in my humble opinion. Virginia Tech I can get excited about... the other two.... meh.

I would have been fine with the Chick-Fil-A Bowl...I guess one could argue the allure of the Outback Bowl is that it is a New Year's Day bowl, and that it may pay an SEC team slightly more than the CFA (3million to 2.4 million respectively last year). Other than that, not much of a difference to me...not like it's the Sugar or Capital One...

As good as Jimmy Clausen is, he will leave ND without a winning regular season. Which can be blamed entirely on Jon Tenuta, the single worst assistant Notre Dame has had in my conscious life.

Yeah, I don't buy that. Tenuta, in 5 years, had 15 players drafted into the NFL from his defensive squads at Georgia Tech. Top 30 in total defense every year he was at Tech and was basically the only reason Tech ever finished above .500 under Chan Gailey. Tech's defense was on the field far more than the offense under Gailey.

At Notre Dame, he's come into a mess.

If Virginia comes to him, he'll be out of ND in a heart beat.

I'd imagine virtually all the assistants are out of ND in a heart beat. Maybe those with ND ties will be kept on, but unless ND utterly whiffs on their head coach, the new guy's gonna want all his own people.

Not that Prater ever seriously considered ND but now he most certainly will go to USC. Too bad for the Irish, he would have become their top receiver. At USC he might make second string.

Ignoring some of the inaccuracies, Prater better than Floyd? The irony of your name is so fun.

Yeah, they usually take an East team and Tennessee has the Monte ties, which might bring in more local fans into the stadium.

i highly doubt that tampa bay locals would go to the outback bowl to see their former defensive coordinator sit in the booth and defensive coordinate for a college football team.

For what it's worth, Monte coordinates from the field. And even if people didn't buy extra tickets because of it, I think it'd be something that would raise the interest of the locals considering how popular he was and still is.

ND silent commit Louis Nix made his commitment public. Shortly after ND soft commit Chris Martin did what he said he'd do - formally re-open his recruiting if Weis was fired. It'll be interesting to see where Martin ends up, and ND's next coach has a lot to do with that, but getting Nix was huge.

The New Year's Day thing is kind of a draw for me. Also, though, the Outback is generally considered more prestigious than the Chick-Fil-A Bowl. It is a good point that the Chick-Fil-A will be played at night and, thus, potentially raise viewership.

The drop from the Outback to the Chick-Fil-A isn't huge - nothing like if we dropped to Music City or Independence - but it just seems odd that they think Auburn will draw better than us. Maybe it shouldn't.

I have wanted to see a UT/Va Tech matchup for a while now, so that'll be interesting if that's the matchup.

Also, I'm hearing Charlie Strong's name in connection with the opening at Louisville. I HOPE, I HOPE, I HOPE this is true.

Charlie Strong should get a head coaching job. Louisville would be a good spot for him.

Huger than huge. Lack of difference-makers on the defensive line has probably been the biggest hole in ND recruiting this decade as Justin Tuck was the only really good one the Irish have had to my memory. Let's hope that commitment holds.

He silently committed to Weis. But he didn't go public today so that he could publicly de-commit.

Yeah, I'm not too worried about a guy who's going public with a commitment one day into the school being coachless.

This is where we differ. The idea that a New Year's Day Bowl is somehow better is antiquated, and in the age of conference tie-ins and multiple lower level bowls being played on the 1st or later, it just does not mean what it did pre-BCS.

Don't get me wrong, I would not have been disappointed with the Outback, but I honestly prefer the CFA. MUCH better time slot, MUCH better opponent, and a football environment that takes atmospheric conditions totally out of play.

Not to mention the fact that the SEC compiles the BOwl Payouts and distributes evenly, unless something has changed from last year.

You are much more passionate about defending a UT Chick-Fil-A bid than I am about Auburn's spot in the Outback...i don't really care. Neither team was very good this year. I'm happy AU didn't have to accept a bid to the PapaJohn's bowl, but other than that...none of the other 4 bowls that were supposedly options stand out from one another all that much.

It's funny that the article is primarily quotes about what's important to the committee. But the following support of PSU comes from the author, not Alba:

"On the flip side, Penn State can point to several blowout victories as well as its national appeal, its enormous fan base, its past bowl TV ratings and its legendary coach (Joe Paterno). But much like Iowa's head-to-head victory, these factors are only part of the selection process."

Was Alba not willing to say that stuff on the record or was the Richtburg just assuming that's what the draw for PSU is? Alba says it's about PSU's history with the bowl. The stuff Richtburg comes up with seems like lazy reporting.

BTW - Joe Pa may be a legendary coach, but he's also the butt of a lot of jokes in CFB. I'm not sure that one weighs in their favor.

The Gator Bowl can't take FSU unless all the teams ahead of them approve, but it still looks like they'll get a bowl they don't deserve in Orlando with the Champs Sports Bowl.

Looks like the SEC bowls are pretty much set even though they decided against making the official announcements until Sunday:

Capital One - LSU

Cotton - Ole Miss

Outback - Auburn

CFA - Tennessee

Music City - Kentucky

Liberty - Arkansas

Independence - Georgia

Papajohns.com - South Carolina

So, if Oregon State beats Oregon, does Oregon still make a BCS bowl ahead of Iowa/PSU/Boise?

depends on whether they drop out of the BCS Top 12 or not
