Do you think he'll be able to recover the way Kobe Bryant did? Kobe was cleared of the charges but he did at least cheat on his wife. Was what Tiger did worse? He got caught more times but nobody is accusing him of rape.

He's probably lost some people forever, but if he returns to dominate he will be more or less where he was before in terms of awe of his ability and earning power.

Kobe also got some sympathy for the perceived potential blackmail or extortion against him.

I think it sounded sincere:

"Not being able to get out there and have sex has really been tough on me," Woods said. "I've missed it. I love [expletive] with all my heart."

Woods said that during his brief time away from sex, he couldn't stop thinking about one day resuming his daily regimen of sexual intercourse with random women who look vaguely like his wife, only skankier.

"When I am out there having sex, I am in complete control," said Woods, an acknowledged master of the long game who claims he is only truly at peace when he is between the legs of a woman. "It's just me and my thoughts. And a high-end escort. And the lounge dancer. And sometimes [caddie] Stevie. And probably some stewardess I just met."

yeah, doing some research, it was on foxnews. what a jerk.

Was he talking about how the public would react, or how he would react? Cause he's probably right about the public. Golf's about as WASPy as it gets.

This statement is such BS. He sounds like a robot and it's almost as if he's never read the thing before.

Well he's used to talking to the media off the cuff...not reading a prepared statement like this. I think it'd be tough to "sound sincere" reading something like that unless you were a skilled public speaker.

I actually think it was more of a personal plea, not a "this is how you get on the public's side again" statement.

Well that's nutty. Hume always seemed somewhat normal compared to the rest of them.

"Someone who probably isn't sorry is apologizing for a harmless act he shouldn't be sorry about to media types who shouldn't be demanding an apology in order to placate corporations that only care about superficially responding to apology demands."
Posted (edited)

The sentence is structured awkwardly, but it wasn't harmless, and it is something he's supposed to be sorry about.

And if the media is responding to corporations who are responding to apology demands, then yes the media should be asking for him to make an apology.

Veronica Siwik-Daniels, one of Woods’ alleged mistresses and a former pornographic performer, watched the event with her attorney in a Los Angeles radio studio. She said she wants an apology for the unwanted attention the scandal has brought her.

“I really feel I deserve to look at him in person face to face in the eyes because I did not deserve this,” she said.

She's got to be kidding, right? Who's going to have sympathy for a woman that had sex with a famous married man as famous as Tiger Woods?

Why does the media have the right to demand an apology? Or the corporations for that matter? He didn't break the law, he didn't (to my knowledge) break his contracts with his sponsors, he didn't cheat at golf.....what's to apologize for?

I honestly don't understand how people keep going back to this nonsense. It's just like all the "we should not care about this stuff" when it first came out.

The guy makes his living selling himself and his public persona. That leaves him open to scrutiny of his private life, including things like getting in car accidents after altercations relating to his wife finding out that he banged 30 porn stars. We aren't prying into a situation where a guy had an affair.

He didn't have to apologize or say anything if he didn't want to. But he wants to play the game (and I'm not just talking about the game of golf) and part of that means he damn well should say something.

other ways to avoid public attention - not going on a radio station in the second largest market in the country, and not having sex in front of videocameras.

If people are pissed off, then stop watching his events, stop buying his stuff, stop supporting the companies that sponsor him. Don't demand that he sit there and lie through his over-sized teeth about how sorry he is. Is a forced apology better than none at all?

Like I said, it sounded as if he had never seen the statement before he went out there and they gave it to him five minutes before. He talks to the media all the time and should be able to read a prepared statement normally not as if he's reading one word at a time.

I didn't really expect much out of this and I guess I got what I was expecting: an insincere apology from a guy who is sorry he got caught and not for what he actually did.

Responding off the cuff to media questions about golf is not the same as reading a prepared statement apolgizing to affairs with 30+ women. It's just not. You can believe what you want about his motivations...personally I could care less. But I don't think that the "way he read" the statement says anything.

You said the media was responding to the corporations were responding to the public demanding an apology. The duty of corporations and the media is to serve the best interest of the public. If an apology is what the public wants, an apology is what they'll demand. Just because you think something's stupid doesn't mean it is.

Why do YOU feel he'd have to hold a press conference to apologize for cheating at golf? Why would we have to hold a press conference to apologize for breaking a contract with Accenture? Why would he have to hold a press conference for breaking the law?

Hah. Man. Reading the first page of this thread is like some kind of awesome reverse-judgment time warp. You can replay the downfall of Tiger in just a few posts.

Doesn't know when he'll return. That might be the only thing people were wanting to hear out of this thing.

That was absolutely the only thing I cared about. I think he'll still be back before The Masters.

Actually it could make a lot of sense for him to skip a major, just to remind golf how important he is to the game. This has gone on during the offseason and he's missed some meaningless stuff, but if he misses big tournaments, that becomes the story and people will be begging for his return.

Posted
He already did miss a major, though (maybe even two; I don't recall whether he missed the British Open) a year and a half ago when he had his knee surgery. So the point of his importance to the game should be relatively fresh.
Posted

I agree. He can miss The Masters and not worry too much about slowing down his pursuit of the all time record. He'll have many more shots at Augusta.

But the US Open and British are at Pebble and St. Andrews, where he has dominated. He won't get another crack at either until 2015.
