1) What do you mean by upgrade?

2) Castro at short and Theriot at second will be happening sooner than later, so there isn't a long term need at second necessarily. Shortly after this, it should be a Castro/Lee (maybe LeMahiu) dp combo, hopefully for quite some time.

We could certainly do worse than Castillo, but in no way is he an upgrade to Bradley, and by no means would he serve a long term need. I'm still rolling with Millwood.

I hope not. They need a better offensive player at 2nd than Theriot, and by the time that happens Theriot will be making significant arbitration money, and his only value is really in how cheap he is. Theriot is entering his 30's and this should really be his last season with the team, unless it's strictly a platoon situation where he's only facing lefties. You have to expect, accept and plan for a lack of production from Casto whenever it is that he begins his career with the Cubs. To do that you have to patch up holes elsewhere so you aren't getting bottom of the barrel production at multiple positions.

I'm trying not to get too excited about all this Castro talk. I never heard of the guy until a couple of weeks ago. I really want to see what this kid can do in spring.

Dock of the Rays likes the idea of swapping Pat Burrell for Milton Bradley and wonders if throwing in Andy Sonnanstine can entice the Cubs to add more money.

SInce this seems to have taken over as the all purpose Bradley thread, Ill just put this here. I know Sonnanstine had a season to forget last years, but I cant not be enticed by this idea. If were going to end up eating a big chunk of money either way, rather than a middle of the road middle infielder or a DH, why not get a high reward type of pitcher? I dont know if the Rays would do this, but I would in a minute.

I dont think the Rays would use a guy like Sonnanstine as a "throw in" anyway, but still, I like the thought.

a season to forget is being kind. he's a control pitcher with no plus pitches who had no control last year. he is nothing we don't already have.

First reported by David Kaplan that the Cubs and Rangers are in serious talks for Bradley. Bruce Levine also chimed in yesterday saying if the Cubs sent Bradley to the Rangers it would be for Kevin Millwood. Now I am hearing from my sources that a Bradley for Millwood (maybe including Aaron Miles) swap is in the final stages and they are just finalizing the money situation in which Millwood is still owed his signing bonus. I am also hearing that the Cubs may in fact pay Millwood's entire contract including the signing bonus if they can include Aaron Miles in the same deal which would offset the money some.

Nothing Kaplan says is worth much and I have no idea who wrote this, but Bradley and Miles for Milwood would be nice.

We could do much, much worse than Milwood. Being able to get rid of Miles on top of it is a nice bonus. With the signing bonus Milwood is owed $27 mil. for next years contract+the bonus (which is payable 2011-2015). Having to get rid of Bradley and his production is going to suck, but we've already been over the fact that there isn't anyway Bradley is brought back and Milwood is a decent return.

While I think Bradley will do better next year, being able to ship him and atrocity of Aaron Miles for a pitcher like Milwood isn't a bad deal.

Where did you get this quote from?

Holy crap though, I didn't realize Millwood is due 15 mill from 2011-2015......I guess I wasn't expecting it to be THAT much. I guess they better take Miles if we pay all of THAT.

The sports section of another message board. I'll follow up if I find out to whom we can attribute the quote.

you misread something. next year will be the last year of his contract and he'll make 12m

No, it's his signing bonus. They had deferred it until 2011, before it starts getting paid. By the looks of what was said in the original post, we'd be on the hook for all of it.....

Total money outlay would be 27 mill being paid by the Cubs for Millwood and 23.7 heading out with Bradley and Miles. I guess for the current year though, we'd save about 2 mill or so from our payroll, open up a roster spot and have 3 mill a year in dead money for each of the following 5 years.....Assuming ANY of this rumor winds up being true obviously.

my fault, it was me that misread it. u read it as 15 mil a year from 11-15

so would the cubs definitely be on the hook for that? if so, that would be a garbage trade. millwood is terrible.

so who is ready for an april rotation of zambrano/dempster/millwood/wells/marshall?

ugh. we thought last offseason was ugly. i think this one is going to top that.

so we're going to end up ADDING payroll for a guy who is unlikely to contribute anything of value to the cubs. i'd rather eat most of bradley's contract and just dump him for nothing. millwood blows

Why is Millwood so inconsistent? Good year last year, mediocre/horrible year the 3 years prior, and led the league in ERA the year before that

iirc, he had a ridiculous babip last season and it ended up catching up to him in the second half.

Acquiring Millwood just about guarantees Hendry lets Harden walk for nothing.

Depending on how much you like Marshelanny and/or projection systems, it might not be a bad idea to let Harden walk. Not offering him arbitration is lunacy though, but I don't think a Millwood deal would hinder that/happen before the arby deadline.
