Adrian Gonzalez-1B-Padres Nov. 9 - 9:31 am et

According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, there are signs first baseman Adrian Gonzalez will be traded "sooner than later."

Gonzalez, 27, is under team control for another two years. But he'll continue to lose value as free agency nears. As the Union-Tribune notes, the slugger was left out of a brochure shipped to prospective season-ticket holders at the end of the season and his agent, John Boggs, has not been approached by the Padres' new ownership group about the possibility of inking a contract extension. Gonzalez posted a .958 OPS and 40 home runs this season. A laundry list of teams would come calling if he's made available this winter.

Hendry would have to get pretty creative to get him, both with finding the right pieces and figuring out what to do with Lee. He's available 1 offseason too soon or else we would probably be strongly persuing him.

I just don't see a way the Cubs become a player in this even if they didn't have Derrek Lee taking first base already.

Really? Even if we didn't have Lee? We have pieces that are probably pretty attractive to the Padres. One of Vitters or Castro (probably top 30 prospects in baseball), 1-2 of Jackson, Carpenter, Cashner, Gaub, Archer, Parker, and probably some throw in pieces that can fill spots on the ML roster for low salaries and be at least league average like Fontenot, Marshall, Gorzo, or maybe even Wells.

I'd go after him anyway, and worry about the "What to do with Lee" problem later.

This. When a talent like this is available, you make it work any way you can (see: Yankees and ARod).

Lee still has his NTC.

Just platoon 'em.

He is such an interesting player. Of course he's pretty useless against lefties (.239 average, .770 OPS), and as you'd expect he hits much much better on the road than at home (.845 at home, 1.045 on road). Considering most hitters in non-extreme ballparks tend to hit better at home than on the road, can you imagine his numbers at a halfway decent hitter's park?

And with some protection around him? The best players he's had batting behind/in front of him in his career in SD have been Brian Giles, Mike Cameron, Kevin Kouzmanoff, and Kahlil Greene. He'd be a player I would be willing to deal Vitters or Castro for.

+1. How is his arm? Is he capable of playing RF?

Yes, this is ridiculous. It's not like this is Gonzalez appoaching the Cubs with a blank check. This is giving up all of our top prospects to watch a 1B stumble around in the OF to see if he can manage to give back 2 runs on D for every one produced on offense.

That'd just be for one season before he moved to first. It's still probably a bad idea, though.

Then we're giving up all of our top prospects to have a great 1B for 1 year in 2011.

Could always re-sign him. But again, it was a dumb idea to talk about him in RF.
