iowa isn't even favored against michigan state.

Good point. Michigan State would beat 2/3 of the SEC and they are the 6th best team in the big ten.

Why is Michigan State good now? A month ago everyone said they were crap.

don't ask me, meph said it.

You're the one that kept saying they were not good. ND should be ashamed that the game was so close, blah blah. Of course Illinois and Northwestern on back to back weekends sure does help with the overall perception.

I didn't say they were horrible, I said ND should beat them soundly, and if they were a really good team they would have, because MSU's talent level is not on our own. But it's been borne out that a) ND isn't really very good, and b) Weis is completely incapable of blowing a team out unless they're a bottom-feeder (Nevada this year, Washington last year).

The Big Ten/SEC pissing match is a little odd this year since neither are very good. The Big Ten's good teams - Iowa and Penn State - haven't really played a really good team yet (besides each other) so we don't know how good they are. The SEC probably has the two best teams in the country but beyond that they aren't very good either (I don't buy LSU one bit). But this is probably more because there just aren't that many good teams at all this year than because the conferences themselves are bad.

Grit & Heart is meph? I might have suspected that a few weeks ago but I never thought about it much. G&H is a lot less petulant, that's for sure.

annoying poster who pretends to like both texas and florida (depending on who is doing better, of course) yup, it's him. Less annoying than he used to be though

Florida State is attempting a comeback against North Carolina right now. Down 24-6 at one point, the Seminoles have fought back to down 24-19 (pending the result of a 2-point review).

Just announced today ND will play Western Michigan Oct. 16, 2010. That means we will play WMU, Utah, Army, Navy and (unconfirmed but likely) Tulsa next year. Unreal. Could be the worst schedule in program history.

Utah is a solid program. As a MSU fan I accept your apology for ragging on MSU about their sheduling. Also you should check out the ND scheduling during the Holtz years. They played some very good teams, but there was plenty of Army Navy and other crap sprinkled in

I don't think you can rag on Holtz's scheduling for playing 3 gimmes when he was regularly taking on top 5 teams in addition to the standard Big 10s/USCs

Navy is always going to be on the schedule. If Navy is the worst team you play, you're doing just fine in scheduling strength.

They used to play all the service academies and that was before air force adn navy became decent. Pre Joe Tiller Purdue was terrible every year, USC was down for most of Holtz's years(though they were #2 the year ND won the NT). They also bailed on Miami when they wanted to have a traditional game. I am not saying ND played the worse schedule out there, but they did have some years were is was pretty weak. Of course CFB scheduling can be a crap shoot sometimes.

In Holtz's 11 seasons, they played Army exactly 1 time.

The only strength of schedule rank site that I could find that has data from those years ranks ND's schedule in the country like this (starting from Holtz's first year):

8, 6, 19, 1, 4, 11, 24, 26, 3, 12, 36

It gradually got worse, but ND's schedules typically were very good. Even in the year where they had all 3 service academies, they also had Texas, Ohio State, USC, and Florida State on their schedule (along with having Northwestern that year who went to the Rose bowl against USC).

Ok, I was wrong about Army. but the point I was making is Andy saying next year will be the worst ND schedule ever because they are playing Tulsa, W Michigan and Navy. I was just trying to point out that in the past ND has had plenty of lay ups in the schedule, which is undeniable. I understand that they have also played plenty of really good teams and several solid teams. Tulsa, W Michigan and Navy are of equal quality to the likes of Rice, pre joe tiller purdue, service academies and several other opponents that ND has had in the past. I also think your Northwestern example makes my point that CFB scheduling is a crap shoot. Trust me that ND had no intentions of playing Northwestern in Chicago if they thought Nwestern was going to be as good as they were that year. Anyway, I realy am not trying to get into a pissing match about the quality of ND's schedule. I have always thought that overall ND does a good job of scheduling, which isnt easy if you chose to not be in a conference. Becuase you have to schedule so far in advance most years, sometimes your schedule may not be as good as you expected and other years it may be much harder than you expected. Also, I dont know who is on ND's schedule next year but I would think without really examining it that at least USC is going to be a top 5 team and MSU, Michigan will both be better teams next year. So even with some lay ups like Tulsa and W Michigan, overall I expect ND to have a very competitive schedule.
