"worthy of being remembered"

Alex Gonzalez more than anything. Bartman's been screwed by the media and fans more, no doubt. But, in reality, his action wasn't nearly as significant as the boot.

plus, assuming Bartman had been on a potty break, 1 of the other 10 or so sets of hands reaching for that ball would have caught it and gone down in infamy, and assuming nobody was reaching for the ball, not so slick fielding Moises Alou probably never catches the ball and the inning goes down as planned and Gonzalez boots the ball anyway. In this scenerio, theres no such thing as a Bartman Ball, and Alex Gonzalez becomes the most hated player in Cubs history.

Seeing it all laid out in this thread - I think we've had a better time of late than we realize.

A handful of events spread out over 1600 games doesn't really reflect "better time" to me. 2003, 2007, 2008 had a lot of good times, most of the rest of the decade was filled with crap and/or disappointment.

Six years of contention in this decade:

2001

2003

2004

2007

2008

2009

Compared to just five others in the balance of my lifetime:

1977

1984

1989

1995

1998

In comparison, these have been golden years.

The Cubs are in the middle of a resurgence right now. When all is said and done, these will be looked upon by future generations as the greatest years for the Cubs.

If there's no World Series Championship, I'll just look on it as "same old, same old."

A few smaller moments:

Reed Johnson's insane catch in Washington in 2008

Neifi's (!!!) grand slam in San Francisco in what I believe was 2006

Hee Sop and Kerry Wood's collision in 2003 with an ambulance being brought onto the field

Julio Zuleta's voodoo in 2001

Todd Hundley flipping off the fans in 2002

Mark Bellhorn hitting home runs from both slides of the plate in one inning in 2004

Ultimately it will be looked at that way by history, no matter what your opinion of me is. Don't hate me, hate the fact that I'm right.

We all know that the ultimate goal of any franchise is a World Series championship. Regular seasons tend to be forgotten without one. It's not my personal opinion, it tends to be a societal fact.

Do we remember the 2001 Mariners incredible regular season? Not nearly as much as we should, because they got punked out in the ALCS. The Cubs in the late 20's and early 30's had some pretty damn good teams. Anyone remember those? Nope, because there was no championship. I could keep listing, but I"m sure you get the point.

Some of the most storied teams of all time: the 1927 Yankees, 1976 Reds, 1998 Yankees, (and again, I could continue) are remembered fondly by history because they had great regular seasons AND they won a championship.

Don't let your personal bias against me get in the way of logic.

That was against St Louis in extra innings. (In STL)

Not that I doubt you, but do you remember which game it was? All I remember is still up relatively late watching the game, which I believe went into extras.

Was that also the game when Neifi had the epic defensive play with Pujols up to end it? My memory is fuzzy, but didn't Pujols either hit into a DP to Neifi or just lined a [expletive] bullet that Neifi caught? I know a close game ended in St. Louis with a Cubs' win because Pujols lined out to Neifi.

I thought the pujols double play was when Demp was closing. Like in 06?

8th inning of game 6 of the 2003 NLCS when Miguel Cabrera grounded into what should have been a routine double play to Alex Gonzalez. As we all know, it wasnt so routine.

wasn't a double play ball

Yep, I was at that one. I still can't believe it happened.

yep, I agree. A lot of people overlook that when talking about what happened in the inning, but it was the killer.

is that when the ball got stuck in the foul pole?

Stuck in the mat behind the OF fence.

No, it hung over the wall in mid-air as the universe tried to reject a Neifi Perez grand-slam.

Does your wife roll her eyes as hard as I do when you go on a diatribe?

Thank your for your insightful input on this topic that enhances discussion in the thread, and therefore NSBB in general.

Seeing as you did not point out anything specifically wrong with my post, I'll assume you agree.
