I was in rio in 84 for Carnival and it was fun, but could never, ever recommend that city for an Olympics. Hopefully they have cleaned up in the last 20 years

Such a good story...tell me a third time!

I would hope for the 14.4 billion they're throwing at the Olympics it would be cleaned up.

What ever happened to London, I thought they had a bid? I haven't been following this closely at all.

No Olympics is no big deal, we should be getting the World Cup in either 2018 or 2022. Thats bigger and more money spread throughout the country.

lol.

The World Cup isn't bigger than the Olympics. I'd love to have the World Cup here but the Olympics would've been much bigger.

Its not exactly a good comparison because the Olympics are centered in one city but the World Cup is in an entire country with the final being held in one of the biggest cities.

I'm thrilled. No more worries about this fiasco taking over the city for years and forcing a death march of a road trip in the middle of the '16 season.

Seriously few of you are insulted that the IOC finds Chicago to be the lesser city of the 4?

I don't think that's a fair assumption to make. I think head to head against any one of those cities, Chicago probably wins. I think when you split the vote amongst 4 cities was where the problem was.

Maybe they should do voting like March Madness. Start with 64 teams and widdle down in head to head matchups...lol

I'm willing to lay down 4-1 odds on a prominent athlete getting kidnapped and held for ransom happening during the 2016 games.

Those are good odds. It would have been nice to have the Olympics here, but I'm fairly certain we dodged a bullet with future spending (read: over-spending). I couldn't see Daley and his team managing that competently. However, Chicago got back-doored on this one. Clearly, IOC and USOC have some friction between them, and I'm willing to wager that Madrid took a lot of 1st round votes away from Chicago.

Gotta love that Rio's biggest arguments were: 1. South American has never hosted (which I think clinched it) and 2. we are so underfunded now that we need the Olympics just to develop the infrastructure that we currently lack.

I feel safe in saying that Chicago is a lesser city than Tokyo.

Not that it really has anything to do with who gets the bid.

I'm going to be interested in reading the articles that will be sure to come out in the coming days and weeks as to why Chicago went from a lock to host the games to the first city eliminated. If they had been eliminated in the finals, I could understand as any of the 4 final cities could have realistically held the games. However, I don't think a single soul expected Chicago to be the first out.

I kinda had a bad feeling when I was watching Chicago's Q&A after their presentation. Onlly 4 questions were asked. They were:

1) a question about the cycling venue and how the distance from the Olympic village would affect the athletes

2) a question about the shooting venue and the unique infrastructure that needs to be set up to host it

3) a question two-part question if Chicago would be tough on doping (in which the Chicago delegation literally answered in one word "Yes") and what Chicago wants their Olympic legacy to be

4) a question about if foreigners would be welcomed into the United States without trouble, in which President Obama answered

So two of the questions had to do with very specific details and a third question was answered in one word. Very few words were said about the big-picture aspects of the Chicago bid and what makes the city the best choice to host.

chicago would've been fun. i'm just glad madrid didn't get it... europe doesn't need to be hosting the olympics every time.

and lol @ people saying this reflects poorly on obama. i guess it also reflects poorly on the other two heads of state that showed up and didn't bring home the games.

It's only LOL if you're an Obama sycophant that can't admit when mistakes are made. It's the US president doing something unprecedented and getting egg on his face. It doesn't reflect poorly on him as a person, but it's a miscalculation by the White House and a waste of political capital.

That's true, though the magnitude can certainly be debated. I think this would quickly blow over for him, depending on how much the Rush/Oreilly/Beck/Hannity crowd tries to keep it alive articifically.

i think it's just unprecedented because the olympics have become massive business and now heads of state attend all the time. plus he's from chicago and there was extra pressure on him to attend; if he didn't go and chicago was voted out on the first ballot people (republican) would bitch that the city's most famous son wouldn't even take a day out of his schedule to support his city, while the other heads of state supported their nation, and the slight cost america the games.
