Awkwardness is my boss laughing about this while the woman whose boyfriend is in construction gets more and more upset.

I'm genuinely bummed, and I haven't lived up there in over 10 years. It would have been really great for the city.

Rio needs to get this. Madrid would just be silly. Plus, I want to be able to watch some events relatively live, rather than on 6-hour delay or in the middle of the damn night.

And if you wondered how the right would handle this (nobody really wondered, did they?), check out Drudge:

Below a huge picture of Obama, "The Ego Has Landed."

"Watching Chicago lose the Olympic bid is like watching a Cubs' game."

F U MSBNC.

Yeah, that's unnecessary ding-ding kicking.

I really don't think Rio can handle it. Chicago should have gotten it if it was based on merit.

Now LA will try for 2020. Sigh.

It'd be kinda bs if Madrid got it. That would be Barcelona in '92, Athens '04, London '12, Madrid '16?

Actually scratch that, I don't really care.

I'm sure Fox News and the like are going to have a field day with this.

If this was a bid by Dallas or Houston and a Bush was president Fox News would be foaming at the mouth with searing rage.

I was hoping they'd get it, but I am relieved that I'll be able to actually go to the city without it being completely chaotic and a complete mess over the next 7+ years.

Unfortunately, I think the Blagojevich thing and all the violence really hurt their bid.

I've got a buddy who is half Brazilian and works in Rio. He says a Rio Olympics will be a massive failure.

My bet is that the Salt Lake City winter games and the resulting scandal will keep the Olympics from US soil for a long while.

What ever happened to London, I thought they had a bid? I haven't been following this closely at all.

No Olympics is no big deal, we should be getting the World Cup in either 2018 or 2022. Thats bigger and more money spread throughout the country.

The World Cup is bigger than the Olympics? By what measure?

Espn Ocho can carry it

How would violence in Chicago hurt when Rio is in the running?

Eh, I dunno, it seems like there's been a lot more "major" violence in the media lately. Whatever, it doesn't matter.

It's pretty embarrassing to be the first one eliminated, but the more I think about it the more happy I am they aren't getting it.

The majority of the IOC members are European. Shocker.

So that blond girl who gave the guy the envelope is going to be in the first ever "youth olympics". What the hell are those? With 12 year old gymnasts and teenagers all over the place, what is the point of youth olympics?

It's the first time the Olympics has been in South America, so I figured they had the upper hand, but I didn't think we'd suffer a first round knockout.

I'm bummed!

I really wanted to take my kids to see it! Arhhh!
