Re: 2009 Chicago Blackhawks

They opened camp this past weekend and play a game this coming Saturday. Opening day is just 18 days away, when they face off against Florida in Helsinki at 11am central time.

The roster is pretty much set with only the backup goalie a real competition. Hossa is out until November but supposedly progressing well.

NHL 10 comes out tomorrow and yes, Kane is still on the cover.

I love how short the NHL offseason is.

Its really short this year because of the olympics

Are they really starting earlier this year becuase of the olympics? I thought early October was pretty standard for the first NHL games. Last year the Rangers opened in London on Saturday, October 4 and their first stateside game was Friday October 10. This year the Hawks start Friday Oct 2 and have their first stateside game Thursday October 8.

The Hawks offseason was short because they went deep in the playoffs for the first time in a long time. But the NHL offseason is pretty normal, the difference is they are squeezing in more games pre and post Olympics to make up for that 2 week break.

I was in Australia for most of the Blackhawks season last year, but I really got into the end of the season and the playoffs. I'm hoping to follow them a lot more closely this year, especially since they're on TV.

If you only followed them late, you might be disappointed by the early season play. The game never seems to be as crisp and fast early in the season as teams get their legs.

not Blackhawks, but bears posting

probably want to keep your head up in the future...

That's wicked. Okposo was already engaged with another defender there and the puck has just been swatted away. I'm not saying it was a dirty hit, but it was borderline, and in today's NHL that kind of hit ends up in a suspension.

Buff and Sharpie, doing it again!

I know I'm probably the only one watching this game, but needed the hockey fix badly.

One rumor has it Sharpie/Buff for Frolov, and another source has it Versteeg/Barker for Frolov, but the common thing between the two is that there is one little holdup.........te Hawks want a young Dmen in return and LA is hesitating. I don't get why LA is hesitating. I know losing Frolov would hurt, but he's a FA at the end of the season. They can't expect the Hawks to give up two young playes (regardless of which package) who are under contract for a couple more seasons for a pending FA, and not ask for a real good Dmen in return. Again it sounds like the only thing that is holding this trade up is the Hawks wanting/needing a Dmen to come with Frolov.

(I'm not liking the Sharp/Buff deal, unless of course the Hawks get Jack Johnson in return.)

I don't know if I would do Sharp straight up for Frolov. I don't know a lot about him, but his numbers are pretty similar and Sharp seems to be the better two-way player. With Huet in goal (I promise I won't be a broken record about the goaltending this year), we need solid defensive guys on the front line.

And you hit on the other thing. If the Hawks are heading toward cap hell, I presume this deal would be geared toward getting some cash off the books now to allow for some in-season flexibility and then even more flexibility when Frolov's contract expires after the season. I guess that makes some sense.

The only way for this team to be consistently good, Detroit good, will be to be able to let guys go and bring up young guys to replace them without missing a beat. I would think that some of the willingness to let Buff go is based on how good Skille has looked.

I'm still hesitant on this, but mostly because I love Sharp's nose for the puck.

it's worth noting that during the one time frolov was on a productive, top end line, he was really good. Frolov - Conroy - Demitra, for a short period in 05-06, was one of the best lines in hockey. at the time, all 3 had injury troubles (something Frolov has MOSTLY moved past) and the line never really stuck after a 10-15 game hot streak.

and frolov really is a good two-way player. his only problem is consistency, he tends to go into 5-10 game funks like twice a season. his play at both ends of the ice slips really badly for those stretches of games, then he comes back to normal and plays great. i really like him and would be sad to see him go...but i can't see how we can keep him under the cap either.

the trade just doesn't really make sense for the kings. byfuglien isn't really that good; at the very least they shouldn't be trading assets for him, as they have young players (mostly purcell and moller) that they need to look at in the roles he would fill.

i wouldn't be shocked if frolov is traded, the hawks might even be a fit, but i don't buy that being the return.

Here's what we know...the Kings and Hawks have talked about a Frolov deal. We also know that this deal is being hold up because of the Hawks insistance on a young DMen coming with Frolov, whom I believe the Hawks have no intention of re-signing, just looking to get some cash cleared off the books. But what we DON'T KNOW is if the Sharp/Buff is on the table or Versteeg/Barker deal on the table. (I don't know if the Versteeg deal is on the table because of his injury).

But if I was the Kings, I prolly would take the Versteeg/Barker deal because A: their young players with good upsides and B: They are under contract for three more years. The Sharp/Buff deal doesn't really make sense, so I agree with you on that AO.

Right. Like I said before, if this is a strategic move to get some flexibility during and after this season, then I can understand it. But they should get back that young defenseman, especially if Barker is going. I'm not confident in Aaron Johnson on the back line.

actually, that wasn't the point. he's been a very good player his entire career but has never played on a seriously high skill line for more than 10-15 games. when he DID, he was exceptionally productive and made one of the better line combos of his career. presumably, he'd play on a more talented line than he has the past few years in LA, which was my point.
