While the initial story is certainly horrible, i think it would be prudent to await all the details/trial to come out of this case before people start lambasting Kaner. There are plenty of instances where charges are overexaggereated against athletes in hopes to get some settlement $$$.

Well, FWIW the police charged them with felony robbery, so someone beyond the cabbie thinks they did something criminal. I doubt the police or the DA would be party to the settlement money in the forthcoming civil suit.

I think its strange that the cab drivers attorney thinks things have been overblown. Also the last line almost wants to suggest that Kane was locked inside the cab, did that lead to the incident?

The attorney for a cab driver who says he was beaten up by Chicago Blackhawks star Patrick Kane and his cousin over pocket change said Monday that the incident had been blown out of proportion.

Attorney Andrew LoTempio told WGN radio in Chicago he thinks both sides "should be able to work things out."

Kane and his cousin were charged with felony robbery and misdemeanor counts of theft and criminal mischief. Patrick Kane pleaded not guilty on Sunday, the same day of the alleged attack.

LoTempio says it is customary for some Buffalo cab drivers to lock the doors of their vehicles with the passengers inside. He says they do that if they think they might be stiffed on their fare.

ESPN is running an article saying the cabbie's attorney is downplaying the incident.

Sounds like someone is greasing the wheels from him to drop this and get hisself paid.

Almost certainly.

Drop the charges, let it quiet down and avoid a civil suit with a nice settlement.

I must admit, it's really odd that a NHL player would care about change on a $15 cab fare. Who cares. Why would you even ask for exact change back? You'd just give him the $15 and go.

A lot of people are being hypocrites in this situation. I believe "let he among us who hasn't beaten a 62 year old man while screaming DON'T YOU KNOW WHO THE [expletive] I AM cast the first stone."

if he was indeed screaming that i'll never question anything he ever does again.

He's Pat Kane, he shouldn't have to tip. Hell that cabbie shouldn't have even charged him for the privledge of having him in his taxi.

As I said before, there's an earlier report that said the fare was $13.80 and he gave $15. He asked for 20 cents back. That would imply that he did tip.

They were probably drunk and being annoying, and when the cabbie refused to give them 20 cents back, they got belligerent, punched him, and took their money back. Yes, it's a pretty awful thing to do, but it's not some ridiculously heinous act. Settle with the cabbie, the DA will probably drop the charges, and get back to hockey.

At least Pat Kane didn't tell the cabby the standard athlete/celebrity question of: do you know who I am?

I saw a vid of the cab driver speaking and he claimed that he DID say that.

Actually, it's the vid at the top of this page

A hockey player of any caliber shouting "Don't you know who I am" is delusional. Because I'm guessing that around 90% (very scientific percentage) of the population would say "no".

The witness who saw Kane doing it (and was the person who called the police) claims he was yelling that too. ("You don't know who you're $*&%ing with!!") But its like Banedon already said, even though they were in Buffalo which is basically Canada, 99% of the country still wouldn't recognize Kane.

The more I think about it, probably a lot more people in Buffalo would recognize him, but still.

Then the lawyer's comments about how the cabbie didn't recognize them -- almost as if he did, then things would have gone differently. Which I'm sure is true.

I agree with the general sentiment. This thing will be settled and everyone will move on. But back in Chicago, the talk will continue. The best thing Kaner can do is play the rest of the offseason by the numbers, do everything that is asked of him, and have a good start to the season.
