I think Philly as a team has done much better vs LHP. They are better off hoping or the best from Samardzija and having Marshall and Grabow each take a turn through Utley-Howard-Ibanez. Doesn't really matter though, Cliff Lee starts that one for Philly.

If you're not going to call someone up, it has to be Samardzija. He's been used as a long man more than Marshall(whose only time reaching 30 pitches in the last two months was him getting torched in 2 IP the other day), and he's coming off his longest outing where he was reasonably effective.

Also, Samardzija's Iowa line the last 2 years as a starter: 18 GS, 103 IP, 3.32 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, 7.95 K/9, 2.97 BB/9, 2.68 K/BB, and a FIP of about 4.30.

Nope. Samardzija is their best chance of not having to waste the whole pen that day. He's the only one who can get you through 5 IP right now, unless you call up an inferior pitcher like Atkins.

I don't look forward to it, but I think it's the least of the evils. Marshall can return to the pen where he's much more effective and Samardzija, even if he gets torched, can hopefully at least give enough innings to avoid burning out the bullpen.

That's how I look at it too. Plus from the bit I saw last night, he didn't look all that bad. He's been real effective as a starter when he's been at Iowa this year, so why not?

 

Like Raisin said, he's better than the other options.
