The Cubs have a long streak of leading the NL in strikeouts. It is in serious jeopardy this season as SF leads the Cubs by 43 at this point of the year. Not that this really matters at all, I just thought it was interesting.

Losing Johnson will hurt those totals for the Giants , Tim how long is the current streak?

Every year beginning with 2001.

I think we had a streak of leading the league in walks allowed as well, but I also think that has improved in the past year or so.

The Cubs were often near the leaders in walks, but the only times they actually led the NL in most walks given during that time frame was 2003 and 2006.

I've been checking up on this stat off and on this season. I knew the streak would be in serious jeopardy with Lincecum, Cain, and Johnson on the Giants.

I remember us almost blowing this a year or two ago and we had a big run in the last couple months to take it again...

Might've been last year with the addition of Harden?

this stat is pretty remarkable, especially considering the turnover of the pitching staff.

It is actually. From Prior and Wood in the rotation to Wood as closer. From Hawkins to Marmol. Howry to Guzman. Dempster from closer to starter. Lilly in. The bullpen has been remarkable at striking guys out for years. Z has been the only constant. He's not a big strikeout guy, but has always thrown enough innings to be among the leaders in the NL.

the days of zambrano, wood, and prior are long gone.

Zambrano is still on the team, and they are still a high K team, and have been with or without Wood and Prior contributing.

BTW, isn't the streak MLB wide, not just NL?

It is.

In 2003, the Cubs set a MLB record for most K's in a season.

i bet we lead the league in pitches per inning, too.

Not sure about that one, but they did lead the league in P/PA with 3.88. Seattle was second at 3.87.

Where do we stand as we head into the last 2 weeks? Would be nice to keep this record going.

We're currently 4th in the majors at 1,148. San Francisco is in 1st with 1,185. And by a big margin. 2nd is the Yankees with 1,154, 3rd is Dodgers with 1,151.

We're not gonna catch the Giants. Not when they got Linecum in there.
