The true benefit of a Zaun (or any other C) acquisition is that it would remove from Lou's limited perspective a reason not to use Fox. Lou is very old-school and closed-minded - in his world view he can't start Fox anywhere else because he might need him at C. Yes, I know it makes no sense but the man has said it himself. Though the Cubs could accomplish the same thing by calling up Cleavenger it's clear they have no plans to do that - so if you have to give up a so-so prospect for a Zaun-like talent, fine. Just get another catcher on the roster already.

What the hell is wrong with you people??

This would be a really good move, but no we're not acquring Roy Halladay so let's throw a temper tantrum.

Yup and like Deeg said, if getting Zaun allows our manager to quit being an idiot by not playing Fox because hes our backup catcher, then its even a better deal.

I personally think it's a waste of resources trying to acquire a 38 year old catcher as a backup when Soto is almost on his way back to the team.

It helps our depth as well, though, because for the days Soto needs off we'll have Zaun instead of Koyie to start.

Before you smacktalk Zaun, I suggest you go here...

You'll be singing a different tune.

Yep, now I'm singing Limelight.

Really though, it wouldn't be a bad move. I'd assume he'd cost next to nothing and he's better than Hill. Any upgrade is a positive in my book.

Waste of what resources? You think we'll have to give up a lot to get Zaun?

It's like when people made the same stupid, not remotely funny comments about getting Jeff Baker. Oh no, we wasted Al Albuquerque!!

Is there a reason we don't just bring up Chris Robinson for 2 weeks until Geo is back and just call it a day?

Zaun's better than Robinson.

Even considering Robinson is free in terms of prospects, costs $1.1 million less, and the hole is basically only there for another 2 weeks or so? Isn't this another example of maybe throwing away a million here and a million there that Bruce's article talked about?

Could we just get Zaun to complete the Rich Hill trade?

I was thinking that, but I recently heard that a PTBNL can not be somebody who was on the big league roster at the time of the initial deal. Is there any truth to that? Was Zaun on their roster at that time?

Zaun is OPSing 20 points higher in the majors than Robinson is in the minors. We'll probably give a prospect similar in value to Al Alburqurque and Zaun's salary has already been at least half paid (meaning we'll pay him in the vicinity of $700,000 or so the rest of the way).

Plus, acquiring Zaun makes him the backup the rest of the season - a nice offensive boost with Soto likely needing some days off once he gets off the DL.

it's $1.5M that's prorated down to like $600k this season. plus really, $2M for zaun next year (club option) would be reasonable for a solid backup switch hitting catcher, and he'd offer good insurance to soto's oblique and shoulder issues. the problem isn't spending $1M on a guy like gregg zaun who is pretty good at what he does, it's dropping $2.5M on aaron miles.

You advocate jettisoning Koyie, then?

As long as I get to be apart of the Zaunbie Nation

Stay up all night thinking of that one, did you?

He'd likely clear waivers if they wanted to send him down. If we got Zaun then when Soto came back it'd have to be either Zaun or Koyie to be demoted.
