I agree. No more trades with Baltimore.

i don't really blame them for asking for a lot... teams can get desperate and overpay for LH relief pitching, especially when trading for a "proven closer" - even if he's not that good. i'd take him and trade a mid-level prospect, but folks like jay jax and h-j lee should not be traded for a decent LH reliever.

can Sherrill play 2B and hit baseballs?

He's never had a professional at bat.

He's the O's Secret Weapon.

Unfortunately, the O's haven't had a situation worthy of deploying their Secret Weapon for over a decade, so they keep him disguised as a relief pitcher.

I guess I wouldn't mind seeing this. I will say, though, that if we get BJ Ryan back to being effective AND add Sherill... we suddenly will have turned a laughable bullpen into probably one of the best around...

I love that by your standards, 20 teams in the majors and 10 in the NL have "laughable bullpens". Because there are 19 teams in the majors and nine in the NL that have a higher ERA and OPS allowed than the Cubs do. And if you like WHIP, the Cubs are 13th in the NL and 21st overall, but they're .01 away from Colorado, which is 7th and 15th.

If we were to get Sherill, and BJ Ryan were to somehow get back to its old self, nobodt could deny that along with Gregg, Marmol, Marshall, and Guzman, it would be the most dominant pen in the league, but those are huge ifs. The O's want top prospects for Sherill, and I dont see it as enough of a priority to give up those kind of chips for. As for Ryan, if he can be slightly better than Cotts, Ill consider it a sucess.

I feel like the Cubs will get this done due to the fact that Baltimore is one of the 3 or 4 teams we trade with.

Unless the Rockies, Pirates, or maybe the marlins have a pitcher on the market. Then there may be some competition!

I wasn't necessarily referring to the statistics at this exact moment. I meant that at the start of the year, our pen was a joke (and I think it's hard to deny that) and adding those two guys would complete the process of our bullpen "coming full circle".

What they were at the beginning of the year means nothing right now.

Their stats on the year are skewed by the horrible performances we got at the beginning of the year. So, if you're judging how good they are or aren't as of right now based on their cumulative ERA and WHIP for the year, then where they were at the beginning of the year does matter, because you're painting the wrong picture because of it.

Sherrill, Marmol, Guzman, and Ryan (if he regains form) in our bullpen would be absolutely sick.

However, I'm much more interested in a bat. I'd love Freddy Sanchez at the top of the order.

Freddy Sanchez's $8MM vesting option for 2010 is a real problem.

Teams aren't paying 2Bs like Sanchez that much jack on the free agent market these days (just ask Orlando Hudson), so trading him in the offseason would likely be problematic, and as we know from last offseason (DeRosa, Wood etc), that sort of commitment would really put the Cubs in a bind.

If you add Marshall and Gregg to that. Wow.

It's probably not worth the prospects needed for Sherrill, though.

Sanchez is a good hitter but he doesn't do anything else. If he hits below .280 he's useless. I don't know why everyone is in love with him, especially given his pricey 2010 option.

With the exception of last year (injury) he's pretty consistently slugged in the mid .400s. Not great, but decent enough for a second baseman.

His OBP is very AVG dependant though.

I present to you the single most ridiculous trade thread in the history of mankind.

http://forum.orioleshangout.com/forums/showthread.php?t=85056

It's bad enough someone has the guts to ask for Jay Jackson and Starlin Castro. A couple people actually said they want Vitters+ with Jake Fox as a third piece. I might be a homer here, but I can't recall any thread ever on this site that had a trade as laughable as this.

Posted
The Orioleshangout guys always over value their players and think they should get a premium for anyone they trade. It's pretty laughable over there.

Someone should tell them the Cubs are interested in Sherrill not Nick Markakis. I'd be pissed off if they gave up any of the 4 guys mentioned by themself let alone a package involving a couple.

I think because second base has been a black hole of suck for the Cubs all year. Sanchez would go a long way to remedy that.
