Absolutely, positively no thanks to Lugo.

He's washed up defensively, and offensively he provides no platoon advantage.

If we're going to go to the scrap heap to find a middle infielder, we should at least get one who is good defensively and can hit left-handed pitchers. Those shouldn't be that hard to find.

Maybe Andres Blanco can hit lefties, but I guess we'll never know.

Sounds like Darwin Barney. Too bad he probably needs at least a few months at AAA.

Cubs, Cards & Mets Asked About Lugo

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [July 17 at 2:56pm CST]

The Cubs, Cardinals and Mets have shown some interest in Red Sox shortstop Julio Lugo, according to Steve Buckley of the Boston Herald. The Red Sox will have to pay all of the $13.5MM remaining on Lugo's deal if they release him, so they're likely to pick up the vast majority of the contract in any trade.

If they really want the guy, why not just wait until he clears waivers and is released and pick him up? The only way Id condone trading for Lugu is if the Red Sox take Aaron Miles of our hands, and I doubt theyd do such a foolish thing.

I really wish Hendry would see what The Royals want for Teahen instead of trying his luck on every crappy middle infielder alive.

The idea behind a trade would be a team that felt someone would put in a waiver offer before them. For instance, the Cardinals might make a trade with the Red Sox for him if they believe the Cubs are certain to put in a waiver offer - as the Cubs' waiver spot is before the Cards'.

I can't imagine the Red Sox would get anyone of any consequence at all in a trade, though.

Our 2b are quite possibly the worst tandem in the league, and we don't want Lugo for virtually nothing?

Combined offensively and defensively, I'm not sure he's better than either half of the platoon going forward, and I'm sure we could do better by focusing on picking up other halves.

If we absolutely had to fill 2b in one roster spot, then he wouldn't be an awful option, but we really should be able to make up a platoon of two players, each of whom are better at their half than Lugo would be.

You don't want Bobby Scales for virtually nothing, so why Lugo?

Posted

Step 1: acquire washed up players who were good in 2004

Step 2: travel back in time to 2004; hope that traveling back in time reverts players to their 2004 abilities

Step 3: immediately trade with real 2004 Cubs for Kent Mercker

Step 4: profit

We'll look at the platoon offensively this year:

Fontenot vs RHP - .236/.322/.369/.691

Baker vs LHP - .154/.154/.308/.462

--

Lugo

RHP - .260/.321/.329/.650

LHP - .333/.415/.444/.859

I think it's crazy to not look into this. Dump Baker if you have to.

Which is more important going forward, Fontenot having 230 PA's of .691 OPS against RHP, or having twice that many PA's going into this year against RHP with an OPS well over .800?

I'm not so sure the recent numbers aren't at least equally significant. Fontenot was more or less a hidden asset back then, playing sparingly. He just hasn't translated that success into more regular playing time. There was very little expectation he could do that before he had the success he did in the majors. If anything I think it's safe to say over 800 is asking too much.

Personally, I'd rather take my chances on Lugo on this team splitting time with Fontenot over having to see Miles on this team ever again. If the risk is low, take a chance on him. He also has decent speed.

So let's say that you weight your expectations 2/3 from this year and 1/3 from his past, you're still getting an expectation that's better than Lugo, with better defense, with a better recent track record, and with someone who's at an age where improvement is more likely than decline.

If we could replace the plate appearances they've already had with Lugo, I'd be all for it. But I think both safely project to do better in the second half.

Lugo's #s are over 36 ABs. Over his career, he has worse #s against lefties than he does righties.

Well I wasn't necessarily talking about Lugo, just Fontenot. There would presumably still be some sort of platoon. I think all PA vs RHP is too much for Fontenot.

His career splits are weirdly even:

vs. righties: .271 .335 .394

vs. lefties: .271 .337 .380

To me, that's what ruins his value.

In the case of how he fits with the Cubs, that might be a benefit. Since Fontenot can't hit lefties, and also probably can't be counted on to play against every RHP either, they could presumably do more of a 50/50 platoon rather than RHP/LHP situation where Fontenot would play a heck of a lot more.

If Fontenot can't be the left-handed half of that platoon, you need to just cut him and find someone better.

Platoon middle infielders can't be this hard to find. I don't know why the Cubs are making it this hard.

LOL, no.

If any team put in a waiver claim on Lugo, the Red Sox' front office would let him go in a second, and the next thing they'd do is take a small chunk of the ~$22M they just saved and have a weeklong party for the ages in some sublime tropical locale.

The reason a trade might be worked out (with the Red Sox getting some marginal prospect while assuming all but the league min of the money left on Lugo's contract) is because some team might prefer to offer up that marginal prospect than have to compete with the rest of the league to sign Lugo once he became a free agent.

Yep, that's a good point. Not sure what I was thinking there.

The Red Sox will eat like 20 million on Lugo(remainder of 9 mil in '09, 9 mil each for '10+'11), the Jays 15 on Ryan but we cant eat the 3+ million left on Miles contract?

they don't have to pay him a dime in 2011.

Worst case scenario, Lugo plays like Miles or Blanco.

Best case scenario, he doesn't.

For league minimum why not give it a shot?
