I would go like this:

Zambrano

Lilly

Wells

Hart

Harden

Reason being is that Harden can get some additional rest and Dempster can come back and take Hart's spot. Also, if Lilly pitches in the ASG, he won't start again until Friday, which should be enough rest after pitching probably 1 inning in the game, whereas Thursday may be a bit ambitious.

Wasn't Hart recently optioned out? If so, I believe Marshall may be in the rotation.

Hart was only optioned out because otherwise it would have been 10-12 days between starts for him (and plus to get an extra reliever up for the next few games). They were going to get him a start in the minor leagues and then activate him in time for his first start after the break.

Zambrano and Wells pitched Sunday so starting them again on Thursday would be starting them on short rest. But if you really think about it, they might have to do that. If Lilly goes in the ASG, he might not be ready to go Thursday so that leaves you with Harden and the 5th starter as the only starters able to go on full rest Thursday.

Great. I'm going to the game Sunday and will have driven 3 hours to see Kevin Hart get lit up by the worst team in baseball.

On an unrelated note, wouldn't it be better to throw Hart on Friday and push everyone else back 1 day.

Hart has to wait the whole 10 days to come back up to the majors. Plus he's scheduled to pitch I think today in the minors so he wouldn't be on proper rest if he went Friday.

According to yahoo, Harden is starting on Thursday.

So we're looking at Harden, Zambrano, Lilly, Wells, Hart probably? If that's the case, then Hart would be pitching the 1st game in Philly. Not good. Lou probably has Hart pitch the Sunday game in DC and then has Wells, Harden, Zambrano in Philly. Not bad.

I don't think it willbe Hart Sunday. I think it will be something like

Harden

Zambrano

Lilly

Wells

Hart

I would rather Hart start Sunday against the Nats. I have more faith in him going 5-6 innings and giving up 2-3 runs, while giving us a chance to win against the Nats, then him try to do that against the Phillies.

Well Lilly didn't pitch last night so he'd be available for Thursday. Maybe something like this:

Lilly (4 days rest)

Harden (6 days)

Zambrano (5 days)

Hart

Wells (7 days)

Went with this because when Hart was optioned, it was opined that he'd be back up to start the 19th vs. Washington. Went with Harden on Friday instead of Thursday to get him the extra rest, but I'm sure he'll still start Thursday. My guess is the Cubs will swap Lilly and Harden.

I really hope they give Harden the extra rest. They could really use an improved second half out of him, and extra rest is probably the only way that can happen.

Playing around with this because I'm bored. With the off-days they have coming up, they can give Harden extra rest for the next few starts while still giving everyone else (at least) normal rest:

7/16: Lilly

7/17: Z

7/18: Harden (7 days)

7/19: Hart

7/20: Wells

7/21: Lilly

7/22: Z

7/23: off day

7/24: Hart

7/25: Harden (6 days)

7/26: Wells

7/27: Lilly

7/28: Z

7/29: Hart

7/30: off

7/31: Wells

8/1: Harden (6 days)

8/2: Lilly

8/3: Z

8/4: Hart/Dempster

8/5: Wells

8/6: off

8/7: Harden (5 days) or Lilly on normal rest

8/8: Harden (6 days) or Lilly (5 days)

After that they have a long stretch of games with out a day off that make it more difficult. Anyway, they could afford to give Harden a lot of extra rest between his next four starts if they really want to. The downside of course is that nobody else gets any extra rest.

Id be absolutely shocked and pissed if it wasnt Lilly tomorrow night.

Be prepared to be shocked and pissed. It is the Cubs after all.

Yep. By all accounts it looks like it's going to be Harden.

Cubs FO must not have access to the same data we do. That's the only explanation for why Harden would start tonight

Either that or Lilly wanted to throw a side session in between starts (which would have been the All-Star game if he had pitched) and since he would have only thrown that side session yesterday he can't pitch tonight. Nobody else is on correct rest so that forces the Cubs to pitch Harden.

Yeah, not knowing what Lilly's schedule was like surrounding the AS game, i'm trying not to get too upset about it, even though I'm pretty dissapointed.

I think they already set their rotation for the next month or so under the assumption that Lilly would pitch in the ASG and they really don't think that Harden's struggles would improve with additional rest between starts.

that may be, but history certainly suggests that it might.
