Would Ascanio, Hoffpauir, Fuld, and a A-AA prospect be a similar enough package to the 1 that got us Harden and get us Heath Bell?

Ascanio, Hoffpauir, Fuld, and a random prospect might be equal to Murton and Patterson. Donaldson and Gallagher were the important parts of the trade.

So, no.

Would someone like Steve Clevenger, Tony Thomas, or Josh Harrison be equal to Donaldson? I really dont know too much about Donaldson, so I dont know how good of a prospect he was.

I would hate to have to send Wells, Marshall, Jackson, or Coleman to the Pads in a deal that wasnt for Peavy, which could very well be a reality next offseason.

The Jeff Baker trade was really unnecessary. There is no reason to have both Andres Blanco and Jeff Baker on the bench. It should be Johnson, Hoffpauir, Hill, Fox, and one of Blanco/Baker/Miles

The Baker trade wasn't unnecessary. He was acquired (it appears) to be a platoon partner with Fontenot.

I'd rather send Wells alone for Bell than a reliever with good potential, a decent lefty power bat off the bench, a prospect and a potential fifth outfielder.

Wells has done very well for us, but do you really think that he alone would be enough to get us Bell? I would like to give them as little as possible so we still have enough that they want if we resume Peavy talks.

I don't think he'd be enough alone to get the deal done, but if it costs more I don't think it's worth doing.

The idea is to give as little as possible in every trade and, in the long run, Wells likely won't have much value. He's done very well thus far, but I'll be surprised if he continues to build his trade value the entire season. He'll likely falter quite a bit as the league sees him more so it would likely be in our best interest to sell high at the deadline and shift Marshall back to the rotation.

What is the point in comparing Harden to Bell? (or maybe more accurately, the package it required to get Harden/Gaudin to a package needed to get Bell)

Too bad Peavy had to go and get hurt, because if everything were approved and official before the deadline, we could be looking at a massive blockbuster. Something like

Wells/Marshall

Jackson/Coleman

Ascanio

Hoffpauir/Fox

Fuld

multiple prospects, hopefully not Vitters

for Peavy and Bell.

Is Bobby Scales dead?

Baker's a better hitter than Scales. Baker has (roughly) the same OPS against lefties in the majors as Scales does against lefties in the minors.

Scales also, in limited plate appearances, also had a .798 OPS against lefties in the majors this year.

I really have to believe that Hendrys at least on the phone trying to make a last minute deal. I refuse to believe that Lou and him are just sitting there agonizing over the decision and thats whats taking so long.

freel was sent to the royal for a bag of rosin. case closed.

Surely trading the guy not on our 40 man roster will free up 3 spots on the 25 man.

Well two anyway, we would have to make room for the rosin.

Freel had already been DFAd to make room for Jeff Baker. The Cubs still have to make three moves to free up new roster spots.

The latest blog from Bruce Miles includes this phrase:

I’m told Jake Fox is probably safe

I'm betting they're going to go with 11 pitchers til the break then. I doubt they'll expose Blanco to waivers and I'd be surprised if Fontenot gets demoted after a strong week.

if aramis holds up during the next couple of weeks...i think fox is gone to an AL team in a package for a reliever

With a DH on Sunday, their infatuation with the extra arm and Harden's very short start on Saturday, I have extreme doubts that will be the case. But the question would have to be who is the guy that goes away. If Patton gets DLd that makes perfect sense. But if they send somebody down and have Patton be one of those 11, that would be very odd. They spent a month and a half desperate of bats with quality start after quality start and plenty of bullpen arms, but suddenly they'd be fine with a short bullpen?

It seems odd to do it now, but I can't figure out what the other move would be. Like I said, they seem to love Blanco and sending down Fontenot after a really good week would seem odd.

Maybe they'll send down Fontenot and platoon Baker/Blanco at second?

I really hope not. I think Fox is worth more then a "AL reliever." Let him play out the season to raise his value and then move him to the AL in the offseason. Trading Fox for a "reliever" doesn't improve the tean.

If it's a very good reliever it does improve the team. The question is, is Fox's value high enough that it would merit more than just a reliever? Or will it get to that point?

That I don't know.
