Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the Yankees acquired Eric Hinske from the Pirates for two minor leaguers, Eric Freyer and Casey Erickson. ESPN.com's Amy Nelson says the Yankees are also sending the Pirates cash.

I'm trying to figure out why this makes sense for the Yankees unless someone is going to the DL. They have about six outfielders.

The Pirates already made one deal this morning, but that's not stopping them from talking trades. Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the Pirates are close to dealing Nyjer Morgan to the Nationals for Lastings Milledge. However, nothing is final yet.

UK/Ping wants Freddy Sanchez.

I wouldn't call trading Nyjer Morgan and Eric Hinske the makings of a fire sale. Nyjer Morgan for Milledge? Really? Is that all it takes? Has Milledge gotten THAT bad?

He's OPSing .594 in AAA for the Nationals so far this year.

pretty awesome that the nats are selling him off

great deal for the pirates if it goes through

Wasn't Milledge "untouchable" for the Mets in 2006 when they were rumored to be in the market for Zito for a playoff push? Haha. Maybe having a decent Zito would have pushed them past the Cards in that NLCS.

1:35pm: The deal isn't complete, but Kovacevic has an update. It would also send Sean Burnett to Washington and Joel Hanrahan to Pittsburgh.

See?! Any deal involving those kind of big names surely indicates a fire sale!

The Pirates have agreed to a trade that will send OF Nyjer Morgan and LHP Sean Burnett to the Nationals for OF Lastings Milledge and RHP Joel Hanrahan.

Burnett and Hanrahan are fine relievers, but the real meat of this trade lies in the two outfielders. Milledge is currently recovering from a broken finger, but is a younger and more promising all-around talent than Morgan, who is batting .277/.351/.356 this season with 27 RBI and 18 stolen bases. The move coincides with the Pirates' ongoing rebuilding efforts.

i can't believe i'm even about to suggest this... but here goes.

*gulp*

if the Nationals are also having a fire sale, how about trading for Christian Guzman and moving him or Theriot to 2B? Guz is due $8 million this year and in 2010. maybe we can get the Nats to pick up some of the bill.

BP's def. eff. lists him at -6 FRAA this year (+3 last year), and he's hitting .325/.342/.440 this season (he had almost identical slash stats last year as well). i suppose he could be a viable option if we're desperate.

please someone talk some sense into me.

Guzman hits for a great average but that's about all he's truly great for. He's getting paid way too much for a batting average. If we're targeting anyone on the Nats for this season it should be Dunn. If we can unload Bradley somehow to make room for him, we'd need to jump on that as fast as possible. He's only signed through next season so he's not a big commitment to the Nats and he could bring back some solid talent for them. They'd be wise to shop him around.

i understand that Guzman is completely worthless unless he hits the way he currently is, but if the price was low enough, i would consider it.

i just don't think that trading Bradley is very realistic. god knows i'd love to have adam dunn, but barring a drastic move of Soriano to 2B or something similarly crazy, we have no place for an impact OF bat.

We traded a backup outfielder, a starting corner outfielder with no pop, and a front end of the bullpen guy an you're calling this a fire sale?

I'll have to read down further and see who's saying salary dump!

How long has this "ongoing rebuiding effort" been going on?
