Almost halfway through the season, who do you see as the Cubs Top 10 right now? Assume for the discussion that the Cubs sign everyone in the first 10 or so rounds in the draft.

Mine:

1. Vitters

2. Jackson

3. Castro

....

....

4. Lee

5. Samardzija

6. Cashner

7. Carpenter

8. Burke

9. Rhee

10. Thomas

Other: B. Parker, B. Jackson, Flaherty, LaMatheiu, Jung, Clevenger, Searle

I'm sure I'm missing some

I think you're being too critical of B. Jackson. While he's not Scheppers as far as what I would've liked in the 1st, he probably has the ceiling to be 7th on that list.

Although he's not hitting yet, Junior Lake is a top 15 prospect IMO.

I would have thought Wellington Castillo would be somewhere in that list. Is that just my lack of knowledge on the minor leagues?

His hitting's fallen off a cliff this season. I'm not a huge proponent of batting average when it comes to evaluating prospects, but the guy's hitting under .200 so far.

As for my list, aside from the obvious of Vitters as the #1...

Possible guys from 2-5 (in no order): Andrew Cashner, Jeff Samardzija, Jay Jackson, Starlin Castro

Possible guys from 6-10 (in no order): Brett Jackson, Tony Thomas, Ryan Searle, Chris Carpenter, Junior Lake, Ryan Flaherty, Kyler Burke

I'm going to hold off on the Boise and Mesa guys until I see some more in-game results, although my gut tells me that Lee will return to my Top 10 next season. If Colvin gets back on his feet at AA, he'll probably make my list since he's still 22. Dan McDaniel has the stuff to make this list, but his production in Daytona has been disappointing lately. Jackson's got enough production in his history and physical tools to merit cracking the Top 10. I think LeMahieu, Kirk, and Raley are interesting draftees who could make some noise if they sign early enough. We might also see a relative unknown from this draft burst onto this list ala Jay Jackson last year, depending on how things shake out.

Brett Jackson isnt even a Cub yet.

KingCubsFan assumed the Cubs sign their draft picks - which Jackson is.

Did I miss something? When did Jackson sign, and for how much?

He hasn't signed yet, but, for the purpose of his list, KingCubsFan was assuming in his first post that the Cubs would sign him.

Assuming Brooks Raley and DJ LeMahieu sign, they are the only other picks I'd rate in the top 20. I'm assuming we don't count Randy Wells, Jose Ascanio or Jake Fox in these lists though all are still eligible (Wells by 1 inning).

P.S. Oddly enough, Cubs released a press release that Brett Jackson signed an hour ago. Check the JAD Forum.

Just curious, where would you put Wells on this list? 7?

Yeah, 7. And he wasn't in my top 30 to start the season.

I'm waiting to see how Rhee recovers from TJS. Yeah, lots of guys bounce back from it stronger than ever, but after the Luke Hagerty debacle, I tend to be a bit more cautious with pitching prospects recovering from arm surgery.

I like top 10 lists, but I also like to put in guys that I think will make the big leagues, and not just guys who have the talent. So my list is:

1. Vitters

2. Jackson

3. Castro

4. Coleman

5. Parker

6. Samardzija

7. Cashner

8. Cales

9. Carpenter

10. Lee

Guys just missing would be Rhee, as I saw him pitch and really like him and hope he comes back healthy, Clevenger, who I think will play in the majors as a back up catcher if not a starter, Samson, who will play in the bigs if only as a back up infielder but maybe a starter, Lake, who has the talent if he can put it all together, and Searle, if he can put it all together certainly has the ability. I just hope Brett Jackson will make the list someday.

I like your top 10 a lot. I might switch up the order of 4-6 a little bit, but that is about it.

There's a big drop off after the 1, a bigger drop off after 3, and a huge drop off after 5. Then again, not many systems have potential all-stars for all of their top 10 prospects. I'd say the overall system looks pretty good, just lacking that one true star player.

Pretty low for Castro. Also, why Searle so high?

Question for you guys? Where does our scouting and development rank in MLB...And no matter how good or bad, how could it be improved?

I believe it's middle of the pack. They had several poor drafts in a row, but the recent ones have given some new life to the farm. Also, the progress in the Pacific Rim has been outstanding. It looks to be improving.

I'd like to see them be more aggressive with early picks in the draft, although I don't know if they have the green light b/c of budgeting handed down from the top.

What do we know about Lee? Ive just heard of him in the last few days. Is he a recent IFA signee or was he from last year? Hes defintiely off to a nice start though.

He signed last summer and received a bonus of $725,000 (the third highest bonus of any international free agent signed by the Cubs this decade behind Jae-Kuk Ryu and Larry Suarez).

Way more on him here and here.

Sounds impressive. They say hed be a top 20 pick in a big league draft. At age 18, I doubt he even cracks Iowa before 2012 though.

I don't feel the Castro love, im just kinda eh on him, maybe im missing something.

Vitters, Jackson, Cashner, Shark, Rhee are guys i would say im excited about. Vitters is hitting the ball out of the park faster than i thought he would. Cashners control this year is very promising. Lee and Carpentar are interesting, especially Lee and Kevin Hart is becoming interesting again too. Jackson has move up my list the most.
