Bruce Miles[/url]"]Speaking of the minors, one pitcher flying quickly under the radar at Iowa is right-handed reliever Blake Parker. Scouting director Tim Wilken took Parker as a corner infielder out of the University of Iowa in his first draft with the Cubs, in '06. Parker began at Class AA Tennessee, and in his first 13 games at Iowa, he's gone 0-0 with an 0.69 ERA and 7 saves. The Cubs like his stuff and the fact that he displays good "mound presence" for being a pitcher for a relatively short time. One of my minor-league gurus who visits here often says Parker has a good changeup, which is impressive itself. A Cubs guy told me it's not out of the question Parker could even make it up to the big club sometime this year. Keep an eye on this kid.

Cashner is pitching well. 4.0 IP 3H 1BB 3SO so far. Given his age, I think it's time for Tennessee.

I think he'll be in Daytona a while longer since he's been on such a strict pitch count (65 pitches) partly due to a blister problem that just healed a few starts ago. Hopefully now, the Cubs will start pushing his pitch count closer to 80.

That's his final line.

Darn, wish he would get to 5 inning outings, especially when he pitches well through 4 and limits his walks.

Is the plan for him still to start?

For now, it is. Not sure if they're eventually going to return him to the pen or are going to see if he can stick as a starter.

another night off for vitters. kyler burke (who i just found out was white) is having a big game with 2 singles, a home run, 3 runs and 3 RBI.

Although reading your post sounded hilarious, I've often thought about how I have come to these preconceived notions myself based on whatever reasons...I just recently found out the same thing about Cliff Anderson...anyways...add a walk to Burke's night.

Some low-fame guys who have been doing well:

Beliveau. His walks are way down over his last couple of games. A low-walks Beliveau, if he didn't need to sacrifice his K's to do that, interestng to dream what he could do.

Dustin Sasser. Hasn't allowed an earned run over his last ten games/16 innings. Solid GB ratio, and K/BB ratios (although the K's aren't fabulous).

Williamson, 23. His first non-cameo shot at full season, started slow. But he's been a workhorse with Daytona's short starters, and he's 26K/4BB/24IP over his last ten games, very nice. I'd be curious to get some scouting on him.

Hart's streak has been pretty remakrable, too.

I feared Cashner would be a wildman. I'm really pleased with how few walks he's had over his last five games.

I don't entirely understand how Hart suddenly became dominant once he was made a starter. Regardless, he's starting to become mildly interesting again. Other clubs seem to value him, so I imagine he'd be amongst those being shopped if the Cubs make a move later on.

Texas' top prospect in Neftali Feliz.

Neftali sounds like a name that would be in Neifi's large and diverse family.

Same thing happened with Ascanio. He was doing awful as a reliever at the beginning of the season in Iowa, and all of the sudden, he was lights out. However, minor league stats should be taken with a grain of salt sometimes. After all, Neal Cotts has always been dominant in AAA.

Hart is fast. In relief, his K/BB was very good; but he gave up a bunch of HR's. In rotation, he hasn't.

It's also been my observation with him, as with Samardz, that they often aren't as sharp in their first inning. As a reliever, if you struggle in your first inning, you aren't good because you don't get your 2nd-5th innings to lock in and cruise.

Also, Hart doesn't have a long history of having a good breaking ball. If the cutter isn't working well, he hangs a couple or hitters sit on the fastball and a couple that aren't located just well turn into HR's. Get innings in rotation, enough to find the cutter, and now you've got enough stuff to keep guys a bit more off balance and to lock in better so you aren't hanging many. I'm interested.

is Cotts doing anything different, or has he just been fortunate so far? 9IP, 1ER, 3BB, 8SO, .103 BAA.

Less pressure?

He also didn't miss by a ton with many of his pitches in the majors and his pitches had movement on them. Maybe AAA hitters are just having a hard time laying off the somewhat close pitches while many major league hitters do not. And we know Cotts can be effective when he either is throwing strikes or hitters are chasing his pitches. His stuff is certainly good enough.
