Stupid move. Fox could have been useful during Interleague play.

It's really the road games where he could be helpful, with the DH. And he's eligible to be called back up for that since it will have been over 10 days by then.

But he can be useful in every game between now and then, as he's been useful since being called up. This team can't hit worth a crap, and they have no bench. Having a guy like Fox as your first bat off the bench every game is extremely useful.

We have like 12 little people who could play 2b now, so that's a plus.

Seriously. We now have Fontenot, Miles, Scales, and Blanco. What's the damn point of having so many 2b?

That's four guys for two positions though - 2B and 3B. Two of them are also backup shortstops.

I thought it was 15 days. Am I mistaken?

Nope, 10.

What a dumb move. I have come to expect this from Hendry though.

Im sure its a lot more Lou than Hendry on this.

Even with Dusty we always had a surplus of 2B's so who knows.

The fact is, we knew that when Miles came back, 1 of Scles or Fox would be gone. When Freel returns, the other will be gone. We dont know exactly when Freels back, but if hes back after the 13th, then Fox wont be able to be broguth up for that first game in Detroit, so it kind of makes sense. This way, they make sure that Fox is eligible to be called back up by that time. Or maybe it could just be a stupid move. Either way.

Yeah, that's something I didn't look at close enough. They don't play a road interleague game until June 23, so Fox could be recalled for that if it looks like they'll be facing some LHP.

Would still be nice to have a bench option that hits for good power. And Fox was hitting everyone in Iowa, so there's no reason to limit him to LHP (I understand the platoon at DH, I just mean as a bench option, he's not brutal against RHP).

Two backup middle infielders is standard for a major league ballclub. The Cubs have 5 players to cover 2nd, SS, and 3rd, which is exactly what most teams have.

Now it probably lines up like this:

Fontenot is the starting 3rd baseman

Miles is the starting 2nd baseman

Blanco is the backup SS and gets some starts at 2nd

Scales is the backup at 2nd and 3rd

Miles, Scales, and Blanco all feel like they should be backups, so it makes sense that it sounds like there are way too many infielders. But there really aren't.

Now I personally would have risked it and kept Fox. You can use him in emergency situations at 3B. But they worked him out there for over a week and it looks like they weren't comfortable at all putting him there.

I probably would have still kept Fox anyway knowing that, but the 2nd middle infielder is much more needed as a standard part of this ballclub than the 12th pitcher. I'm much more unhappy that it wasn't Patton who didn't get the axe in favor of Fox instead of Scales or Blanco.

Ahhhhh, what the hell? Why can't Lou see that Aaron Miles is crap? The icing on the cake will come when someone is bumped to make room for Freel. This team will NOT win with Miles, Freel, and Blanco all on the roster at once. We should only have one of those guys at most, preferably none although I can't complain about Blanco's play lately. Miles and Freel can't do anything.

What about Blanco? I assumed when Miles came back that either Scales or Blanco would go down.

It's pretty clear that Lou loves Blanco for his glove, and his bat isn't really that bad. I expect him to be the everyday 2B until Aramis gets back.

I think this move is the whole don't want get to stuck with 1 backup middle infielder with the only option in the minors not being able to come back up for 8-10 days. If somebody had a day to day injury in the next few days, the Cubs would be in trouble.

It still isn't a good move to me even with that reason. But it doesn't preclude Fox from coming back up for interleague play either. He will be eligible to come back up before he would get any chances to DH so they can always revisit this situation then.

How? If someone gets hurt, the Cubs can replace them with someone of the same position. Recently, when Miles went to the DL, Scales came right back up after being sent down. I believe he didn't even leave Chicago.

He was talking about a day to day injury, not a DLing.

Seems like a recurring problem for this team. 2006 middle infielders Neifi, Womack, Cedeno, Walker, Theriot, Hairston, Jr., Izturis

If it gets to that point, then you insist that Patton takes a phantom DL stint and call the guy back up.

Four players for two positions aren't really that much, though.

Why can't they keep Miles in AAA?
