Who cares?

CHC Sean Marshall, LHP (2-2, 4.02) Cubs (21-16) @ STL Adam Wainwright, RHP (3-2, 3.83) Cardinals (22-17)

Scouting Report:

Cubs: Marshall was assigned to the bullpen over the weekend just in case another lefty was needed. He missed a turn in the rotation when last Friday's game against the Astros was rained out. This will be his sixth start of the year. In his last start May 10, he gave up two runs on five hits over five innings against the Brewers. He has thrown six or more innings in three of his five starts.

Cardinals: It appears that Wainwright is back. Despite taking a loss, he was brilliant in his last start, throwing eight innings of two-hit, one-run ball. He threw strikes, but more than that, he threw quality strikes. Wainwright believes he has fixed a delivery flaw that had his arm slot too high. He's also back to relying more heavily on his sinking fastball. The combination added up to an excellent game on Saturday, and it should continue to do so as he goes forward.

Sean gets a start, and they'll lose 2-1.

Sean gets the blame for giving up the 2nd run, goes back to LOOGY duty.

Oh yes, you know it's possible.

There's been a lot of talk about Jake Fox maybe, he can't catch the ball but, if he can hit, why not? Hell, even if it's only for a month, a month may give Soto time to get in better shape and heel up. I'm ready to go with Hoff at 1b for awhile as well thus far, he's shown he can do something Lee can't do - hit.

And Freel, he was acquired to do what exactly? It wasn't to play baseball that's for certain.

His poor defense will lessen the amount of good his bat can do. It's already questionable whether he could come up here and hit like Hoff, but with his defense he'd have to.

He was brought in as depth. We have two of Miles/Freel/Font/Scales starting at 2B and 3B right now, but if any of them need to go out, we need the added depth so that Koyie Hill isn't playing third base. Also, there are going to be times when Theriot isn't playing, further weakening our MIF depth.

Wait, are you talking about Fox coming up and catching?

That's a horrible idea, since he can't do the whole "catch the ball" part of the equation.

I've seen him play much, how terrible is he? Because in addition to not hitting Soto' become 2007 Kendall when it comes to throwing base runners out.

It's not just about throwing out runners. Fox is very poor when it comes to things like calling games, blocking pitches in the dirt, and so on. He recently caught in-game again and had 2 passed balls to his name.

Soto is putting up a .280 .360 line or so for the month of May. His slugging is down, but hes starting to hit, and hes getting on base at a pretty good rate. Soto isnt the problem right now.

I think Im easily the biggest Fox supporter on this board, and even I cant fathom the idea of him behind the plate. As soon as guys like Marmol and Zambrano start getting wild, it will be a disaster.

I want my bench players to do something really well. I don't care if Fox can't play the field. Give him 1 AB a game as your primary RH pinch hitter. They've got the whole "flexibility" thing under control with guys like Freel, Scales, Reed and Hoff. They have absolutely no use for 7 relievers right now. They've gotten 10 innings this month out of Ascanio, Patton and Cotts. They are fairly worthless. If it doesn't work out, so be it. But they need some sort of threat on the bench besides Reed Johnson. They aren't running starting pitchers out there who are getting knocked out in the 4th inning, like Marquis did all too frequently. Guzman, Gregg, Heilman, Marmol and Wells/Marshall can handle the bulk of the bullpen duty. Get Fox up here and see if you can get something out of his bat.

Cant disagree with any of this

If it would cost something or worth, I could see them being aprehensive about it, but the most wed lose would be Freel, who isnt used anyway or Scales who can be called back up in 10 days if Fox is a disaster. Seriosuly, the guys putting up monster numbers. Its not like the above average numbers that DuBois and Snyder put up that you question how those can translate to the big show.

Put in Theriot, Miles, Freel, put Harden in the outfield, trade for the Rays' fastest guy and fly him in before the game. Run around like it's 1971, pull your hair out, scream and shout.

I think we see some lineup changes tonight in the form of Hill and Hoffpauir (and maybe Fontenot back at 2B w/ Miles at 3B). This leads to us scoring at least 4-5 runs, which will be enough due to a strong performance from Sean.

Cubs win 5-2 on a strong game from Theriot sparking the offense, and a 3R blast from Hoffpauir.

Fred, I live for your worthless stat post they are fun. Wait, I just realize I need to get a life

Guy, calm down they actually hit the ball yesterday....ok Sori and Lee didn't but they had some nice drives that were right at people we will win 7-3

Did that sound too Dusty like?
