I actually posted this morning on another forum that it'd be nice to have Freels on our roster instead of Gathright, so I'm mildly pleased by this.

I think the real question is how gritty are we now?

Put Theriot, Johnson and Freel on the field at the same time and watch the grit fly.

Meph would approve of this trade.

I don't really see a downside here. It's nothing to get too excited about, but what the hell was Gathright going to do for us?

Because he's happy the Cubs got rid of one of those people?

4:44pm: According to Bruce Miles of the Daily Herald the Orioles will pay the difference between the two players' salaries. Basically the teams are paying the same amount as they would have had they not made the deal.

Not horrible then. At least Freel is more useful to the team than Gathright.

I'm happy with this, he was an ideal leadoff-type guy for the Reds when he was healthy. Can play a bunch of positions, so he's more valuable than Gathright.

The good news is Hendry's latest visions of what makes a successful baseball team seem to have shorter lifespans than the previous visions.

Can't forget Aaron Miles in that group.

Do you think this new plan to be more RH will work?

Ryan Freel-OF- Cubs May. 8 - 5:12 pm et

Cubs acquired IF/OF Ryan Freel from the Orioles for OF Joey Gathright.

There was no room at the Baltimore inn for Freel, who becomes a player the Cubs can plug in at several different positions. Gathright, meanwhile, will report to Triple-A Norfolk and provide Baltimore's organization with outfield depth in both speed and car jumping.

At least I got a slight kick out of rotoworlds take.

Have we made grit jokes yet?

Ryan Freel can't hit, is an absolutely boneheaded baserunner, can't hit anymore, and doesn't play any position well. He really doesn't nothing well anymore except the "ability" to play everywhere but SS, 1B, and C.

He certainly upgrades the Cubs in the DUI and pickoff department, though.

We would lead the league in grittiness and be last in runs scored.
