Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports that the Cubs are talking to the Orioles about a trade for Ryan Freel. As Rosenthal points out, the Cubs have more oufield depth than expected, thanks to Micah Hoffpauir and Kosuke Fukudome. Joey Gathright, who has batted only 14 times this year, is expendable. The Orioles are talking to other clubs about Freel, who has about $3.3MM remaining on this year's contract.

Yay, a guy we dont need. Sorry Fox, Dubois, and Snyder

two of them are outfielders and one is an atrocious fielder anywhere. the cubs don't need outfield help. plus let it go on dubois, he's AAAA. do we need to call him up and watch him not hit again?

but yeah, freel sucks and is overpaid, so this would be a terrible idea. i don't really believe it unless the orioles ate a bunch of money.

If we have to be stuck with garbage, Id just assume it be our own garbage that we can pay league minumum. If you're going to go after Freel, why not just re sign Edmonds? Freel makes 0.00 sense even if the O's picked up the whole bill.

Whether we like it or not, usually, when the talk about one of these kinds of minor deals it tends to happen, so I guessing that Freel will be a Cub by the end of the weekend, unless Scales is given enough of an opportunity and wows Lou.

Here's the foxsports article instead of the mlbtraderumors one...

That article says it's a done deal, no?

Might want to change the thread title.

It does now, but it didn't before.

Doesn't cost the Cubs any extra money. ByeByeBobbyScales.

Wow - the page FOX page was updated between my last post and your post. I was about to ask how you figure it doesn't cost the Cubs any extra money but then refreshed the page and saw it had just been updated again.

Eh, I guess he has to be better than Gathright. Whatever.

Someone tell Jim Hendry there are more teams than the O's

Probably no other teams that actually had an interest in acquiring the talents of Joey Gathright.

It's essentially a Freel - Scales decision, as the Cubs would have been on the hook for Gathright's 800K either way.

It's a done deal according to the Baltimore Sun:

The Orioles have traded infielder/outfielder Ryan Freel to the Chicago Cubs for speedy outfielder Joey Gathright.

The deal is expected to be announced within the next hour.

Gathright, 28, has already cleared waivers and will be sent to Triple-A Norfolk, where he'll join the Tides' outfield. He had three hits in 14 at-bats with the Cubs this year after batting .254 with 21 stolen bases for the Kansas City Royals last year.

Freel is better than Miles and Scales, and is a better defender at 3B than Fontenot. If you can get him for nothing, why not?

If it keeps Fontenot at 2B when Ariamis gets hurt next time and keeps Miles out of the lineup, then I'm all for it.

His last two seasons have both been worse than Miles. Given that he is older, and only marginally better for their careers, I'm not so sure he's even an upgrade to Miles.

So we traded a guy whose 3-14 for one whose 2-15 but plays better IF defense? Edited by UMFan83
