Seriously, now that we are pretty much getting back to full health offensively, why does this guy keep playing every single day? He is terrible, and shouldn't even be on the roster.

I wouldnt so much mind Miles if he were on a contract like Gathrights. basically your run of the mill backup middle infielder, every team has 1. I just dont understand how being a switch hitter warranted Hendry to jump on him like he was some kind of prize.

Well it only matters if Miles contract is preventing the Cubs from getting another player. Or if they were going to consider DFA'ing him I guess.

They mentioned last night that Miles has started 14 games in a row? That's ridiculously far more than anyone would like to see. He has been hitting well vs. LHP though (.333/.333/.500).

He's playing because there's a LHP on the mound and Fontenot has played 14 of the last 15 days.

Put in Bobby Scales, then.

I probably prefer Miles.

They may as well have given Scales the start so they could see if hed be worth keeping around and getting rid of Gathright.

I doubt 1 start would tell them very much that they don't already know. The decision to get rid of Gathright should be an easy one and has little or nothing to do with Scales in the sense that Gathright is a redundant part who contributes almost no value to the team.

If Scales isn't the answer, there's Blanco or even Nate Spears. None of those guys are going to set the world on fire but at least they would allow Piniella to double switch one of the middle infielders if he needed to without risking playing someone out of position.

It looks like he's started the last 12 games... I wish he'd go away.

Scales might not be an answer, but I don't see how Miles is either.

The main problem I have with Miles is that we probably lose nothing with Scales instead of him, yet we're mailing Miles a bushel full of cash on a regular basis, and Scales gets next to nothing.

We're bleeding money on Miles for no additional benefit, in all likelihood.

The answer is Freel ;) But of course these posts were made before that acquisition.

As far as Miles... I don't really mind him as a utility infielder, but he is certainly overpaid and overrated by the front office.

You could change Miles to Freel and still be right.

We're only paying Freel $800,000. I don't see how that's overpaying.

With Scales and Freel on the team, there is absolutely no point for Miles to be wasting a roster spot and hogging ABs. DFA, please.

The issue would be backup SS. Is Freel capable at SS? Scales is more of a 2nd base/ 3rd base guy.

We will have to eat his contract.

Miles isn't a backup SS either.

Miles isn't exactly a legit backup SS either....

And I'd rather eat his salary than have him eat at bats, because that's what's going to happen as long as Ramirez is on the DL, Lou is our manager, and Miles is on the roster.

Your right he's not, but Freel has never played a game at SS in his career.

UZR has Miles as a -17/150 defender at SS in 111 career games(He's -2/150 at 2B in nearly 3 season's worth, fwiw). You can't tell me he's any better than say, Fontenot would be.

i do not agree.
