one and done mercenaries don't look twice at schools like illinois and i have no problem with that. it's all handlers and payoffs and circus tricks and dads with oddly-timed administrative jobs with the university. would it be nice to land a guy like wall or henry or rose or cousins or barnes or evans or bradley? absolutely. can a team like illinois compete for a national title with 3 and 4 year players? of course. although i will concede that it's real hard to beat these rim-rocking half-men, half-beast-children that race to the hoop every single time down the court with shooters from peoria.

it's both frustrating and strangely satisfying to see self attempt to get in on a kid from springfield, il early. on one hand, i hate to see him anywhere in the state of illinois, he's a douchebag and he's dangerous, but on the other hand, maybe he's not confident in his abilities to waltz into a kid's house at the last minute without even recruiting him and secure a commitment anymore? maybe he's worried about the state that paid him to build recruiting inroads for another state school finally shutting him out? i don't know. but maybe he should stick to recruiting super-stud, rocket-car driving, precious juice-hoarding, mad max-hunting, great humongouses like xavier henry, as his brethren do. he'll probably wind up with just as many national championships while the little guys at illinois count our every final four as a precious, magical experience and every little shooter from lincoln township, rochelle, and metamora as a hero.

maybe weber can get to these super-studs early, before they become master-blasters and kamalas needing handlers and agents and PR guys and money-lenders. it's kind of funny to see self turn to this method, though. maybe he can invite the kid's junior high team to midnight madness next year.

Lol. Sulley, I love you, but you're the purest representation of the insane, bitter Illini fan I've ever met. At least you're hilarious about it, though.

Speaking of crybaby Roy, here's his long-winded response to that fan incident the other day.

It’s strange that it has gotten a heck of a lot attention, but the good news is that I haven’t had to pay too much attention to it. I haven’t heard it, but people are telling me about it. It was unfortunate. Just to tell you in my opinion what happened… Let me give you some background first. In New York City, when we played Ohio State, it was the absolute worst scenario that I’ve ever had to put up with.

“A couple of guys about 10 feet from our bench screamed and yelled at us all night long. Yelled at our players and would say, ‘Deon Thompson – you stink.’ But they didn’t use the word ‘stink.’ Or ‘Dexter Strickland – you stink,’ but they didn’t use the word ‘stink.’ We had to listen to that garbage all night long and we had two different parents that sort of got a little disappointed, a little upset, could have gotten into a confrontation. The security guards did absolutely nothing and it really ticked me off. So I said, ‘I know we have to put up with that on the road, let’s just go.’ We didn’t say anything. Joe Holladay was sitting two or three feet from the guy, but we didn’t say anything whatsoever.

“Saturday night, all of a sudden, some guy stands up and starts yelling at Deon and it came from behind our bench. And you know how when some things happen, you instantly think of something? My first thought was, ‘Now our parents are having to listen to somebody else, and it’s in our own building.’ And so I turned around and I said, ‘Who said that?’ And about 40-50-60-70-80 people started pointing up at this guy. The guy gets up and starts gyrating with his arms and everything like, ‘Yeah, it was me,’ and that kind of thing. And it really did tick me off. I turned and said something to the ushers behind the bench and they started up through there, and I turned around and coached the game. I have no idea what happened. I never turned around to the guy again.

“But my feeling was immediately that our parents who sit right behind our bench have to put up with that stuff again in our own building. So that was it. And after the game, they told me that they had escorted the young man out. Supposedly what had happened was they had asked him for his ticket and he didn’t have a ticket or wasn’t supposed to be sitting in that seat. Supposedly, and I want to emphasis the word supposedly, he didn’t cooperate as much as they wanted, and they chose to take him out.

“Am I disappointed in the whole thing? Yeah, I’m disappointed that it happened. I’m disappointed that I even reacted to it. But again, in our own building, I don’t think that parents ought to have to listen to somebody chastising their son. And whether that’s right or wrong, that’s the way I am. If it’s wrong, it’s wrong. I hate that it happened. I wish that it never happened. Evidently, people have been getting after us all day [on Monday] or getting after me all day. But I tell you what, if that’s the only thing they’ve got to get after me about, I’m a happy young man… If I’m wrong, then that’s good, but I’m not apologizing.”

I'm sure the student section at Maryland will now show the proper respect towards the immortal heels.

Yeah, Roy pretty much set his team up to be totally reamed for the rest of the season.

A lot of us thought Roy was a dbag a few years before he switched schools though. The ole Aw Shucks thing always seemed to good to be true.

So, just to be clear--it's fine if Weber and Co. drop in on an eighth grader but not Self?

Also, like you two wouldn't have jizzzed on each other's faces if "hired gun" X Henry would have so much as taken a recruiting visit to Illinois.

Henry's a great player, but anytime you go head to head with Cal for a kid and come out on top, I would kinda be a bit worried. Maybe Self was on the level with recruiting him, but I still would be worried had we beaten out Cal for a kid.

As for the 8th grader thing, we have to do that to compete. It's weird and I don't like it, but understand why Weber has to do it. Why is Self though?

IG cracked the case. We paid henry to come to KU. Probably had nothing to do with Cal luring him to Memphis and then bolting. Or Henry growing up a KU fan. Or both his parents being alums of KU. Or his dad playing hoops at KU. Nope. It was the classic Self-payola. From what I heard, during Self's in-home with X, Anthony Longstreet leapt out from under Self's toupee holding a Samsonite full of unmarked bills, and it was pretty much done-zo from there. Hope the NCAA doesn't find out.

I mean, honestly, if you really think Self is paying recruits to come to KU, why would he even bother getting involved with this 8th grader? Wouldn't he just show up to the kid's last high school game driving a Bentley with gold bullion in the trunk and "forget" the keys in the kid's backpack?

I didn't say Self did pay him money, I am just saying I wouldn't have felt comfortable had Weber beat out Cal for his services. Obviously there was some stuff that would make KU more appealing to Henry, but you said we would have creamed ourselves over a Henry visit. I actually would have been worried about what Weber was doing. The only one who I think got paid was Collins.

Speaking of Henry, he did a good job in the offseason of losing weight or toning up or whatever. I'm not going to act like I scouted him intently, but I saw him probably 8-10 times and he always looked slow and bulky to me. I bet he weighs at least 15 pounds less now than he did his junior year.

Actually he said you would've jizzed on each other's faces. It was quite poetic.

Sweet, DePaul lost at home to American tonight, who is rated 335th out of 347 in D1 RPI. This might be the worst loss in DePaul history.

That is my favorite part.

Stanford came oh-so-close tonight, falling 71-70 at home to Oklahoma State. Still no good wins for the conference.

Also, Oregon State lost at UIC to give the Flames their first win against a D-1 team.

He allegedly put a lot of work in over the summer w a personal trainer. He definitely has an NBA body. Don't know if he can really defend yet, and he could get better putting the ball on the floor. But he's got a sweet stroke.

he's got that awesome form that i've never been able to duplicate no matter how hard i've tried where he keeps his elbow locked until he's at the very top of his jumpshot, and then fires it off. It's awesome to watch.
