Yeah, but that only works if your BCS opponent is someone with a pulse.

I just don't see the benefit in the current system to playing a team with a pulse. It sucks, but there's just not much to gain there.

The benefit comes when you have an idea of what a real team looks like when you hit the bowls.

When you're a BCS school, you see 4-6 of those through conference play.

OSU begs to differ during the years of back-to-back BCS title game appearances.

Preseason Top Five:

1. Florida

2. Southern Cal

3. Oklahoma

4. Texas

5. Ole Miss

In The Mix: LSU & Ohio State

I think I would put USC #4 or 5 just based on the number of question marks they have. Move Texas and OU to #2 and 3.

They played 6 bowl teams in '07 in conference play. I didn't check '06, but I know they beat a good Texas team in their noncon, and blew out everyone but then #2 Michigan and Illinois that year.

Notre Dame's schedule is so mediocre this year that Nevada might actually be one of the best teams they play. The Pack won eight games last year and return most of the starters that made their offense one of the best in the nation last season.

With Purdue having a new coach, MSU having to replace Ringer and Hoyer, and our schedule suddenly outfitted with both Washington schools and UConn in addition to Pitt, Stanford and Navy, 10 wins should almost be expected even though the team really isn't 10-win good.

Nevada also has a very interesting offense to watch. I really like the Pistol formation.

And expectations are at 10 wins, or else Weis probably gets the ax. Of course, even if he wins 10 games it could get interesting next year when the schedule will be more difficult.

S04 PURDUE

S11 MICHIGAN

S18 @ Michigan St.

S25 STANFORD

O02 @ Boston College

O09 PITTSBURGH

O16 Army (Chicago)

O23 @ Navy (Baltimore)

N13 UTAH

N27 @ Southern Cal

With 2 games TBD, and since we're already playing four road games, under the insane 7-4-1 philosophy that will probably be two cupcakes.

Unfortunately, 2009 is pretty much going to be our scheduling template for a while.

My prediction for Illinois next year is wrapped up in one word: Inconsistent.

Our offense will be very good, our defense will blow, and I am almost positive our special teams will continue to suck. Hopefully we find a way to go 7-5, but I am not getting too excited. Hopefully we can beat Mizzou, as it is probably the only game I'll get to go to due to being graduated.

Continuing in their proud tradition of scheduling complete ass teams OOC, PSU's schedule includes Temple, Syracuse, Akron and Eastern Illinois (in addition to not playing Wisconsin or Purdue in conference). Such a joke. At least they start a home and away with Alabama next year

I was going to go get IU's schedule since they normally play a bunch of crap OOC too, and I found Eastern Kentucky, Western Michigan, @Akron and...@Virginia? Random.

purdue sucks.

2012-13 we have a home and home with virginia, and then 2014-15 we have one with rutgers. i'd prefer that they pick teams who would actually be reliably good, not two teams that might turn out to be bad (like syracuse this year).

Mizzou has a ton of turnover this year, with Weatherspoon being the only returning defensive starter, and breaking in a new QB(with the top 3 receiving targets gone from last year). They'll rely on Washington more this year, and hopefully Gabbert transitions well and shows why he was a big time recruit. The schedule is relatively kind this year(although a road trip to Nevada and a neutral against Illinois is a rough non-con), and with KU getting the second year of their South gauntlet, Mizzou has an outside shot to win the division over Nebraska and KU.

I figure 8 or 9 wins is likely for Mizzou. They could hit 10 if Gabbert breaks in quickly enough. I'm excited to see what we'll do with our new O and D-Coordinators though. Obviously the D was a major problem last year and hopefully they can do some things to limit the damage this year with so many new starters. I'm hoping the new OC implements a bigger running attack into the spread. We've got some solid RBs and a better running attack would help keep the pressyre off of Gabbert.

In the end, 8-9 wins would be fantastic. 10 and/or a Big 12 North title is a longshot but something that could happen if everything gets clicking in conference play.

I think the Big 12 N will come down to who wins the KU/NU game. I don't see MU as much of a threat this year, primarily because no matter how talented Gabbert is, he's going to be a huge step down from Daniel.

Also, aren't you guys pretty thin as far as backups to him?

Some people thought the Blaines would end up the same way the Chases did, with the shorter, less heralded guy beating out the better rated recruit for the starting job. Though it seems that Gabbert's extra year of experience in addition to his gifts has given him the leg up on Dalton, but Dalton is still well regarded. Ultimately though, he is a freshman with no collegiate experience, and is in some legal trouble right now(although it appears to be not very serious), so Mizzou is probably thin as far as capability, but not necessarily from a talent perspective.

With regards to the North, I'd agree, except I simply don't think that highly of Nebraska. They're replacing even more of their offense than Mizzou, and they had a gap to bridge to reach Mizzou's level to begin with. KU is pretty clearly the best team, and the only reason another team should win the North is because of their schedule(both OU and Texas, @TT, Mizzou on a neutral field). It wouldn't be unlikely at all for KU to lose to both OU and Texas, and split Nebraska and Mizzou. If it were Mizzou that beats them, they could lose @OSU, v. Texas, and v. Nebraska and still beat out KU(the other 4 games are the dregs of the North and v. Baylor). If it's NU they can lose @Mizzou, v. OU, and v. TT and still beat KU(with the same dregs of the North + Baylor as their conference wins).

I'd heard the Dalton situation was more serious than that, but that was probably KU fans over-exaggerating.

You're right about KU's schedule. It'll be a key factor. TTU, MU, and CU are all must wins

Dalton will probably be a third stringer this year anyways. I feel like I've heard Jimmy Costello has the leg up on the No. 2 spot.

It's come out in the past day or so that there was a lot of misunderstanding. It's still up in the air though.
