The "Clausen won't be a high pick" parade continues.

On Clausen, I don't think he's going in top 20. Maybe he'll change minds soon. Some teams like him, looking for reasons to love him.

I don't think anyone with a national voice likes the guy except for Mel Kiper.

I understand why teams are nervous about him, but for teams like Washington it would be hard to pass on him. He really must have sucked it up during the interview process.

The problem is everyone that knew him at ND has mentioned issues with his maturity, leadership, and sense of entitlement. Whether it is true or not, what I am hearing is that he's a guy that came on campus as a freshman and acted like he owned the campus. I do know that he made his announcement he was attending ND after stepping out of a stretch Hummer, but that was 3-4 years ago. Also there are rumors of reasons that the guy punched him outside a restaurant late in the season.

I think teams are more afraid of drafting the next Ryan Leaf when they look at him.

really? everyone? I've seen a lot of stories from teammates that thought very highly of him. and he did own the campus from the moment he stepped onto it. He had to. He was the only QB on the roster worth a [expletive]. He got sacked 58 times as a freshman. you don't get up after 50+ sacks if you don't have some ego.

I'd say I hope he falls but i said that with Quinn and then the Browns traded back in to get him, which is the worst of both worlds (I know it was his favorite team growing up, but it was a disaster for him).

All one needs to know about Clausen is that Jon Tenuta, after getting fired from ND, with no incentive to compliment anyone at the school (and not a man prone to complimenting anyone anyway), ripped those that think Clausen has an attitude problem and said that if everyone on the ND team had an attitude like Clausen's, the Irish would've won a lot more games.

That being said, I have been trying to be muted in my praise of Clausen because I thought Quinn would be a great pro and that's landed a lot of egg on my face. I would say that if Clausen can't succeed in the NFL I'm not sure what ND quarterback can, because he's as good as I've seen at the college level.

There was this Joe Montana fellow that turned out decent.

There are also people complaining that even with all the weapons he had that he didn't win more games. Clausen is a better QB than Quinn was. I always like guys that are that highly regarded coming out of highschool, assuming they didn't fall flat on their faces academically, athletically, or character wise. If Clausen wasn't a QB, his maturity and attitude would not be in question at all. It's because he is going to be given charge of an NFL huddle with more experienced players (at some point) that every thing he does has been under scrutiny for 3 years.

That being said, I wouldn't pick Clausen if I was in the top 10. I don't think he's anywhere near as good as I have seen at the college level. He can make all the throws, I just worry about his ability to do so against good NFL defenses.

yeah, all those 1000-yard RB were a great help to him. And that O-line chock full of future NFL stars. He had it easy.

come on raw, that's a little ridiculous. Clausen didn't have weapons. Golden Tate became a great WR last year, but he was worthless for anything other than go routes in 2007. Floyd is very talented, but young and has had significant injuries each of in his 2 years. Rudolph is a very good receiving TE, but in '08 he couldn't block to save his life. His OL was porous when he was a freshman and became barely passable by the time he was a junior. No RB ever ran for more than 700 yards when Clausen was there. No RB had a single run of more than 27 yards when he was there. No RB had more than 5 TDs.

I don't know how anyone can saw Clausen was surrounded by weapons with a straight face. There's a lot of young talent on the roster now, but in 2007, ND had as many scholarship players as they would have under the "death penalty." Some of his teammates may not have liked his competitiveness. But Clausen came to ND to be coached by Weis and play at the next level. I don't think everyone that signed up to play at ND in the last several years necessarily had the same drive. Kelly's biggest complaint about the team upon getting to ND was their attitude/toughness. If this weren't ND, he probably would have cut several players before spring practice.

It's just some of the complaints have been so specious. "He's cocky"...there is not a single good starting NFL QB that's not cocky. You'd better be cocky if you're going to run my team. "He got punched outside a bar"...there still hasn't been one accepted account that said he did anything to bring that about, and living in South Bend, I can tell you that there are ND fans stupid enough to feel like punching Clausen was justified. "He had tons of talent around him"...yeah, he had some good receivers, but except for Tate, a lot of them were injury-prone, as GR mentioned he had basically no running game, his offensive line was atrocious his entire career, and his defense was an insult to the word "atrocious" his final 2 seasons. And playing on good teams didn't stop Mark Sanchez from being picked 5th overall, nor did it stop Mr. 80-Yards-From-His-Knees JaMarcus Russell from being picked 1st. And surprisingly little mention is made of his playing 9.5 games with torn tendons in his toe and still putting up a video-game-like 28:4 touchdown to interception ratio (which could've been more like 33:2 if you factor in drops, deflected interceptions and bad calls that took away a couple of his TD passes).

I can see why people would be leery of taking him - I'm becoming more and more convinced that taking a QB in the top 10 is about as much of a roll of the dice that there is due to all the factors that play in to whether a guy succeeds - but the reasons being thrown about to justify not taking him don't make any sense.

Did you read the part about where I said... "there are people"....obviously not.

I did, but what's your point? I also read the rest of that post and your previous post, where you conclude that you wouldn't draft him in the top 10 b/c you don't think he can succeed in the NFL. If you didn't agree with it, why would you add that comment in implicit support of your ultimate conclusion?

Obviously just so I could get your panties in a bunch. Seriously though, I've said nothing but good things about him in this thread. But since I wouldn't pick him in the top 10, I obviously agree with all the detractors who are clearly making things up.

For what it's worth, I wouldn't take Bradford in the top 10 either. I would take him before Clausen though, but they are as close as any 2 QBs (IMO) in the last 10 years.

It takes a lot to justify a sucker punch in the face. But what I hear is that the dude just didn't like Clausen's general douchebaggery and decided to hit him. Not even remotely justified. But it supports the argument that he has issues w/ attitude.

is every ND fan personally related to jimmy clausen? this is kind of sad guys

Far too many ND fans don't like Jimmy Clausen enough, if you ask me. Me and GR aren't exactly the minority, but I wouldn't say we're part of an absolute majority either.

From what I heard, the guy accosted Clausen (and his girlfriend) unprovoked and when he didn't like Clausen's response, he hit him. I guess one could somehow spin that into an attitude problem if they wanted to see it that way but if you ask me it sounds like a drunk guy acting like an ass.

I think the best thing for Clausen is to go to a team later in the first round where he can spend a couple of years carrying the clip board. I think the perfect thing would be for him to be drafted by the Vikings and for Farve to come back 1 or 2 more years.

I agree. Would love to see that.

Would also love to see Carolina trade into the 1st round if he fell that far...but Carolina only trades into the 1st round for guys who I don't like, so that won't happen.

that's what I meant before about wanting BQ to fall in the draft. But if a crap teams trades back in to get you at 20, you're better off going to that crap team at 5.

What, like me referring to him by his first name? I don't know, I do that when I talk to other ND fans and it just sort of carries over.

now that i think about it, one of my friends will say "come on sam" before every snap, and it really annoys me and I never say anything, so I guess i'm a hypocrit.

Interesting rumors about the draft. A couple of tidbits:

Sources close to the Lions have told me that OT Russell Okung is also still a possibility in Detroit, even if the Lions don’t think they can land DT Albert Haynesworth in the near future.

I’m hearing the Chargers have a lot of interest in NT Terrence Cody in the first round if they can’t get the running back they want.
