Im betting they bring up Fox, and at least give him a look at third.

fox can't play third. at all.

Our options appear to be Miles at 2B and Fontenot at 3B or Fontenot at 2B and Fox at 3B. The first option hasn't worked out great. I wouldn't mind giving the 2nd option a run.

i'm pretty sure fox has played like 2 games at 3B. he's a horrid defender at positions he plays regularly; he'd really be a disaster at an unfamiliar position. the options are pretty much 1B or corner outfield for him; i think he's just give away too many runs at 3B to make the added offense worth it.

not having an adequate backup 3B is another in the long list of hendry failures. the derosa trade was stupid on so many levels.

You know, Matt Craig would be nice to have right now(even though he's pretty terrible at 3B)

i would say scott moore, but he hasn't hit much since we traded him.

Scott Moore's gotta be out of options by now doesn't he?

At least Moore was foolishly traded away for a worthless pitcher. Craig was pooed on by the organization from the second they drafted him.

Moore is out of options. The Orioles got him through waivers and removed him from the 40 man roster.

I forgot about Craig. He would have fit in perfectly with the murderes row of career minor leaguers we have in Iowa. Kroeger too.

That might be true, I honestly don't know. But Miles is pretty bad with the bat and, from what I understand, isn't a defensive dynamo either (I'll admit to not having looked into it or even seen much of Miles in the field this year or ever). And Fontenot isn't great with the glove at 3B. As bad as we have been, I wonder if it's not worth a shot to see if Fox can mash up here as he is in the minors.

I agree with the other point. Obviously leaving this team without a backup 3B, when you know ARam was going to miss significant time every year (~ 15 games/year on average), was one of Hendry's many failures.

I think Fox would be an unmitigated disaster at third base. Let's just start off with the bunt factor. When you combine his lack of range and lack of experience at the position, every fast player on other teams will be bunting for hits. It takes time to learn how to make the quick glove and off balance throw, and Fox will have to rush it over there because he won't be getting to the ball that quickly.

Then you add in that he has range problems on normal balls and from all that we've heard at other positions he would have some serious hands issues as well. His arm would be the only thing that would not be terrible at that spot.

In response to GR about Miles, most of his defensive problems are at SS. He's about average at 2B with below average range but turns the DP well and has good hands. It's when he goes to SS that his range really hurts him.

Going from Miles to Fox would keep 2B defense about the same. 3B defense would be much worse and the lineup would be better (and possibly much better). I really think Fox is actually below the minimum capable level at third. Other teams can't target Fontenot out there even though he is poor at the position but they definitely would target Fox.

So why did Jim Hendry jump all over an average 2B who sucks at SS? The Miles hatred stems more from the fact that Hendry jumped on him like he was Hanley freaking Ramirez during the off season. Miles is a run of the mill beckup infielder, no reason to ahte him for being what he is. The hatred should be directed toward Hendry for brning him here on anything other than a 1 year league minimum deal.

I wonder if the Padres would give up on Kouzmanoff.

Kouzmanoff wouldn't be any worse than our other options offensively (maybe better), but I wouldn't want to give much up for him.

A career 101 OPS+ with 263 career Ks to 63 BBs.

He'd be able to fill in at 3rd and maybe even 2B. He's got a bit of a platoon split(but not drastic, which is a good thing), and he's a career .813 OPS away from Petco. We could do a lot worse with a bench spot.

Oh I wouldn't be against acquiring him at all. I'm just saying don't give up too much for him.

The problem with Kouz is hes their everyday third baseman, and theyd want a solid return for him. What we really need is a guy who can play all around the infield, and if they can do some outfield, super. I hear the Indians have a guy like that, but that dead horse has been beaten a bit too brutally already.

Nobody is giving up anything useful this early in the season. Management can't signal they're giving up on their season this early.
