Home Opener Discussion 4-13

I was on the road and couldn't watch the game. What was the context for the booing?

The booing occurred in the pregame when all the players and coaches were announced to the fans one by one.

To add to what was said by manbearcub, Marquis and Gregg were also both booed before the game, and there were a smattering of boos for players like Miles and a couple of others.

Yeah, the booing was rather silly to me. Rusch had some struggles in Chicago, but with his story I have a really hard time booing the man.

And it's just ridiculous to boo your own players on opening day. I wasn't in support of bringing in Aaron Miles and I don't think he'll benefit the team very much by being in Chicago, but it makes absolutely no sense to boo him after two ABs this season. At least give him a chance to be awful before you boo the man.

Good article, by the way, CCP.

Now see, that reeks of the Dusty Baker mentality that said, "I don't care what his numbers were in previous years with other teams, I need to see him with my own eyes before I can judge." You should either be against booing Miles or not. Saying you can't boo him because he's had only 2 AB's is wrong.

Maybe I worded it wrong. I'm against booing players on your own team anyway - so I won't do it no matter who the player is and how bad he is. But, if the fans insist on booing a player, don't do it on opening day. Especially when a player is coming off a career year.

I don't think Miles will repeat that year, but if he does, he could have some level of value to the team - however minor. At this point there's a high probability we've got Miles from pre-2008, but it's not a guarantee.

That makes a little more sense, until the bolded part. Why would you expect a fan to think, "hey that guy sucks, but last year was his least sucky year. He performed it with our biggest rival and is very unlikely to repeat it, but I will give you the benefit of the doubt for a yet-to-be determined grace period to prove me wrong."

I'm against booing Cubs players. I might give out a two second growl of frustration after a bad play, but sustained boos are just obnoxious. But there's no need for the qualifiers.

The qualifiers certainly aren't necessary - like I said I'll never boo a player on my team - but I guess I added the qualifiers because it's even more astonishing to me that general fans will boo a player who has had two ABs with his team. I've always thought of fans booing their own players as exasperation for time after time hurting the team - much like Neifi, Jacque, LaTroy, etc - not as a general "I don't like you" attitude.

Jacque and LaTroy don't fit that description. Jacque was booed on the first homestand cause he started like 0-14. LaTroy was booed after blowing like 1 save.

Hmm, I thought it was longer for both of them. Ok, strike them from the example.

Jacque was booed because he was absolutely the wrong fit for the team, fans knew it, he started horribly (offensively and defensively) and bitched about the fans. Latroy had a reputation for being a good reliever but choker in the closer's role before he became a Cub, and when that reputation appeared to be validated very early on, people didn't forgive.

Regardless of your stance on booing, it doesn't make any sense to criticize people for not giving a veteran acquisition enough time. Veterans have enough of a track record to judge

their ability to contribute. I don't need 100 PA to figure out my feelings about Neifi Perez.

I just think it's especially needless and silly this early in the season. But again, I'm against it in general when you're booing your own players so I guess the qualifiers aren't necessary.

I really thought that was ridiculous, especially Rusch. What did he do wrong? Marquis was an adequate 4/5 starter for us.

I was also disappointed in the lack of reception shown to Bradley.

I hate that the booed Rusch. As it goes, he was one of the classiest guys around. He wasn't always at his best for the Cubs, but he did come through for us at times and was always willing to take the ball. Plus he had one of the best nicknames on the team.

Uh, yeah he was. That was his best, and that was the problem.
